Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula
Advantages: softens skin
Disadvantages: unsure if it actually works
I don't know about you but when I think about skin formulas which are designed to help your skin not stretch during pregnancy I think about Bio Oil as that brand seems to be advertised to the nines. I have, however, found that Palmer's Body Butter is not only a cheaper option but one which is easier to apply and feels nicer on the skin. Whether or not it is just as effective is a subjective opinion as far as I'm concerned but I will quite happily stick with this one.
The amazingness of Cocoa Butter
This body butter which is a very thick moisturising cream. It's 'flavour' is cocoa butter which some of you may know is well known for helping to repair and maintain the quality of the skin. Cocoa Butter melts at body temperature making it absorb into the skin very easily so helps to improve the dryness of skin. There has been research carried out which suggests that this ingredient not only helps people to relax when it is rubbed into the skin but it also improves circulation and helps to reduce the chances of cancer!
In my case I bought this because I have heard how cocoa butter helps to improve the firmness of skin which then helps to prevent the chances of stretch marks during pregnancy. Apparently, it's smell also helps people to feel happier too so I thought it would be ideal during pregnancy so even if it didn't help to prevent my stretch marks from occurring at least it would have a positive effect on my emotions!
=== Tub ===
You can buy this body formula in several different tubs and bottles. You can buy it in a bottle which has a dispensing nozzle which is quite good but I recommend this tub as it's easier to get the desired amount out and even when it is running low you do not have a problem trying to get it out like you can with a bottle.
I must admit the actual sight of the tub isn't very inspiring, it looks quite dated and not very appealing really unlike other brands of this product which do look more interesting! It is a cream pot with a brown strip over the name of the product and the orange Palmer's logo above it. There's nothing special looking about it at all but then I suppose it's the product inside which is what counts. The lid has a picture of cocoa beans on the top but that is about it.
The tub opens by untwisting the lid on the top which is a wide lid so if you have sticky or greasy hands it can be quite hard to get it on and off so I always make sure I have washed my hands well after using this butter so that I can put the lid back on properly.
When you take the lid off this pot you see the body butter which is a very pale brown, almost cream colour. The smell immediately hits me when I take the lid off but I am pregnant and so my sense of smell is very active at the moment, my husband says he doesn't think it is that strong smelling so I do recommend that before buying this you have a good smell of it so you can be sure if it is the right strength for you. I think it smells a bit like nutty chocolate but in a subtle way whereas my husband thinks it just smells a bit like chocolate. It is certainly quite an unusual scent and did take me a while to get used to it but now I do really like it, it is quite luxurious!
The butter is quite a dense consistency. I wouldn't say it is as thick as other body butters I have used but it is almost as dense as actual butter. When applying it to the skin it's easy to get it out of the pot by running your fingers through it and it seems to almost melt against your skin so comes away from the pot and onto your fingers easily. You are then to massage this into your skin in circular motions towards the heart. I find it does melt into the skin just like it should do, it doesn't feel greasy like butter just a bit creamy and within a matter of minutes it has absorbed. This is unlike Bio Oil which seems to sit on the top of the skin and feel oily for a while afterwards.
After a few minutes this has absorbed into the skin so that it doesn't rub off on your clothes or make you feel sticky. I also think the smell fades away so that you are not walking around stinking of cocoa!
After using this Cocoa Butter you should feel some of it's benefits. It claims to have several. It contains vitamin E which helps to improve the dryness of skin and so with this body butter you should have less dry skin, firmer skin, be soothed, have a better frame of mine and be more relaxed...
I am unsure about just how effective this cream is in preventing stretch marks. This is my second pregnancy now and I didn't develop any stretch marks in my first pregnancy although my daughter was born 3 weeks early. I am now in my second pregnancy and am almost at my due date. Over the last week a stretch mark has appeared despite me using this on a daily basis. I do think that it has probably helped my skin to not develop lots of them and perhaps it is because I have never been so stretched with pregnancy that this stretch mark has appeared... it is hard to know if it is due to this cream though that is why I haven't had more, maybe if I hadn't have used it I still wouldn't have got many due to the make up of my skin in general but I don't think using it can do any harm so if you are wanting to use it to prevent stretch marks it can only do good things as far as I'm concerned.
Also during pregnancy your skin can become quite dry as it is stretched so this can also help to keep it from becoming rough and sore and I definitely think it's helped with this. My skin has been dry at times but I find applying this has helped to soften it so I definitely think it has moisturising abilities and is very effective at this.
In terms of giving me a better frame of mind I again am not completely convinced that it is the ingredients that do this or maybe just the actual action of massaging something into my skin on a daily basis. When massaging this in I feel a bit like I am giving myself a few minutes of luxury and treating myself. The sensation of touching your skin in this way also releases hormones which make you relax and so it may actually just be the motion of massaging that helps me to feel more laid back and relaxed!
After using this for nearly 40 weeks now on a daily basis I have found that my skin has only developed one stretch mark and feels nice and smooth. I have used this on my feet when they are feeling hot too not just on my stomach and I have found that it helps to soothe them and soften the skin. This does definitely have some positive effects that is for sure.
What I like
I like that it is easily absorbed into the skin because I don't like feeling greasy or oily after applying products to myself or having my clothes stick to them. I also like that it does have some effect upon the skin which seems to help keep it nice and moist and take away any dryness that may be occurring due to pregnancy. I like that the tub is easy to use so you can get all of the product out without it being an issue trying to get the last bits out like you can with a bottle. I like how the smell doesn't stick to your skin too.
What I don't like
I don't particularly like the design of the tub as I don't think it looks all that appealing, it could definitely do with modernising. I also don't like how sometimes putting the lid back on can be difficult if your hands are greasy.
Yes I recommend this if you have dry skin or if you are pregnant. I cannot be sure if it prevents stretch marks but in my case I have used this on a daily basis throughout my entire pregnancy and have only managed to develop one stretch mark and that has only occurred in the last week when I have been extremely stretched! It is nice to have a bit of luxury to rub into your skin, some days you can be so busy you have little time to spend on yourself so even if it's just two minutes spent massaging this into the skin it can make a difference feeling like you've treated yourself.
Even if it doesn't prevent your stretch marks just think of all the other good things that cocoa butter apparently does! Maybe you will be helping yourself to be a happier person or to improve your circulation or even prevent future cancers developing! If it is such a wonderful product which research suggests it is then it must be doing your body some good!
The smell is something which you need to try for yourself before you buy as if you are pregnant then you may not like this as your sense of smell is very heightened so I do recommend that you smell it before buying it.
It isn't just for pregnant people, you can also benefit from it if you're not pregnant but I did write this review from my own experience of using it during my pregnancy as that was the reason why I bought it. I wouldn't ordinarily have chosen this particular body butter other wise.
I do recommend this. It's available from Boots for £4.99 and a tub lasts about 3 months when applying on a daily basis. You can also buy other kinds of Palmer's formulas which can help in pregnancy such as body oils and skin firming creams all of which are available at Boots.
