The REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask was included in the Look Fantastic beauty box in June this year. It sat by the bath for a while until I used it over several bathing sessions.
What is it?
The REN mask is a potent exfoliating mask formulated to renew the complexion, dramatically improve skin tone and radiance, and reduce the appearance of fine lines.
What does it do?
•Removes dead skin cells to renew the complexion
•Combats congestion, blackheads and blemishes
My tube provided three uses. I slathered it over my face and left it on for ten minutes. It is thick and very sticky so stays adhered to the face very well. The idea is that you pat and lift it to remove the dead skin cells from your face. I sort of rubbed it around my nose area especially which is my worst pore area and chin and forehead a bit too so they didn't feel left out.
Who can use it?
•Suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans
•Skin Type: Suitable for all skin types
This is a very different sort of face mask. Described as 'clearing the flotsam and jetsam off skin' it is quite gentle so you don't feel scrubbed after this exfoliating treatment although it does advise on the label that it is not suitable for sensitive skin. I think that is down to the active ingredients.
The science behind the mask
There are active element to this mask which are 100% pure fruit acid complex (lactic, glycolic, tartaric and citric) and papain enzyme (from Papaya). These ingredients create a gentle but potent exfoliating action that targets dull, congested and mature skins.
The AHAs resurface the skin, visibly improving firmness and radiance, while at the same time reducing fine lines, post acne scarring, blemishes and blackheads - the outcome is a bright, new complexion. Not suitable for very sensitive skins.
Price and availability
The REN range is widely available online but you can also buy it from M&S. This is pleasing as it is a British brand. What is not so pleasing is the price, at £32 for 50 ml.
I did feel like my skin had a healthy glow to it after using this face mask. I do like the REN skincare range too as it is made in the UK. This face mask is nice enough to use but I do think it is a bit expensive although the ingredients are great so perhaps it is worth it after all.
I've been using this product for about three months now and absolutely swear by it.
Great packaging, including a small cap to place over the dispensing nozzle after first yes to stop product during out / nozzle clogging which us a small but great touch.
The mask is a very thick gel texture and glides onto the skin easily. It gas a lovely smell as well (a cross between honey and citrus type smell - yum!
You leave it on for about ten minutes so I normally pop it on just before I jump in the shower.
Because of the thickness of the product you do need to spend a bit of time getting it off, but here's the good bit. When you buy the mask it comes with a cloth for removing it. I have some hot water to hand to soak / rinse the cloth in and this works brilliantly.
Skin feels amazingly mousy, soft and plump afterwards and has a lovely healthy glow with dead surface skin cleared.
Last Christmas, my Mum gave me several REN products, including the glycolactic radiance renewal mask which I believe retails at around £30 for 50ml. Though I'd never buy this my self as it is far too expensive for my skin care budget, I was over the moon to receive such a luxury product and I couldn't wait to use it! The product is basically a very strong bio active peel mask which contains a huge amount of ingredients including natural fruit extracts. The massive list of ingredients really scared me to be honest as I don't like using chemical heavy products, but on a brighter note it is paraben free and doesn't contain any synthetic colours or fragrances. The manufacturers claim that this product 'renews the complexion' by removing dead skin cells & 'combating' blackheads and other blemishes.
As someone who is unfortunately prone to getting blackheads, this claim was the one which excited me the most - I am yet to find a product that actually clears all of my blackheads or even makes a noticeable improvement in the appearance of them, and considering how expensive this is I thought that it might be a bit of a miracle product. They also claim that it reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles - this didn't excite me as much as I am only twenty years old and obviously have no wrinkles just yet! They also say that it will leave your skin looking healthier, brighter & radiant. REN say that this isn't recommended for sensitive skin which concerned me a little - I do have really sensitive skin, however I really wanted to try it so I ignored the warning and I have been fine each time I've used it - no irritation or anything, other than some slight redness and a brief tingling/stinging sensation the first time I used it.
The product comes in a cute little bottle which is very plain and simple and once you take the lid off there's a little pump which you just press down on gently to get the product out. One pump is enough for my face - a little goes a long way and its important not to use too much - mainly because it is so pricey that I want my bottle to use as last as possible and also because it is a very strong product. The product its self has quite an unpleasant texture - it's sticky, and although it's not mega thick it is not runny either. It is easy to spread oved my face evenly and it has a nice fruity scent to it which isn't overly sweet or anything but it smells really nice. Once on my skin, I find that this just sits on the skin like a gooey layer - it doesn't make my face feel tight or anything, which I wasn't too impressed by at first - when it comes to face masks I like it when I can feel something because it makes me feel like the product is actually doing something/working. The first time I used it I used a little too much and I found that it made my skin sting slightly, but since using less each time I use it I haven't had this problem.
After ten minutes I remove the product. It comes with a muslin cloth so it's very easy to remove and it doesn't take long at all. I was expecting it to be a nightmare to remove because of the sticky texture but it comes off easily. Once I have removed it, my skin always looks quite flushed - I'm not sure why, but nevertheless this doesn't bother me because the redness fades very quickly. As for the results, you won't see an instant improvement and this is a product that needs to be used consistently over a period of time. The first time I used this I was so excited - I naively thought that my skin would look flawless and a million times better afterwards, and I have to say I felt let down. It did feel a lot smoother and 'cleaner' but I didn't see any improvement in how healthy and bright my skin looked. I decided to persevere with it though and after using it 1-2 times a week for a good month or so I began to see an improvement.
There's been a big reduction in blackheads and the ones that are still there do not look as prominent. I've even noticed that a tiny little scar that I have on my chin that wasn't too prominent to begin with has faded from what it used to be like and it is now almost completely unnoticeable, even when I am looking at my self up close in the mirror. My skin does look brighter and healthier - not at all as dull as it was not too long ago, but whether or not this is purely down to this product I don't know because I have been eating exceptionally healthily and looking after my skin better in general for the past couple of months.
All in all I am going to give this product three out of five stars. It's good for helping to fade marks/spots etc and it has made a difference to the appearance of the blackheads that I have on my nose and chin but it is not an instant miracle and it needs to be persevered with. It is very expensive and I definitely wouldn't purchase this my self and I am very thankful that it was a gift as I think I'd have felt very let down had I forked out £30 of my own money for it. My once dull skin has definitely perked up since I first began using this, however I am not entirely convinced that the improvement in my skin is 100% down to the product - it has definitely had some impact but it is no miracle.
I purchased the REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask for Space NK several months ago. I had heard positive things about the 'clean' skincare brand. The mask claims to be a potent bio active peel mask designed to renew the complexion, reduce the appearance of fine lines and dramatically improve skin tone. The product contains glycolic and lactic acid along with natural fruit acids from passion fruit, lemon, grape and pineapple. There is also papain from papaya exfoliate the outer layer of the skin, encouraging cell turnover and smoothing fine lines.
The packaging is quite simple, reinforcing the clean ethos of the brand. The mask is contained in a transparent bottle with a pump dispenser, allowing you to see how much product is contained within. The mask has a gel like consistency, which is clearly derived from fruit acid, it is sweet smelling nectar; which is orange in colour. It is almost seems edible! It is fairly thick and applies to the skin easily, I find three pumps is enough for a full face application. Once on the face, it is colourless; just a wet sheen is visible.
REN recommend leaving this mask on for 10 minutes and then wiping it off with a dampened muslin cloth (the cloth comes with the mask) I tend to leave it on for around 10, sometimes I leave it on for longer if I lose track of time. It does state that some tingling is may occur when using this; I have not experienced this sensation when I have used the mask, and I have normal skin. The mask does not drip off the face, or dry. It remains gelatinous throughout. The product is easy to remove, the cloth is of reasonable quality, not abrasive, this wipes the mask away. Once removed, I swill my face with water and I can immediately notice the difference from using this.
My skin feels soft and smooth, it also looks brighter, thanks to the acids removing the dead skin cells. I have used this mask multiple times over the last few months and I have always noticed a difference in my skin tone and texture. It is recommended that this mask is used once a week, but I tend to use it around once a fortnight if I feel my skin needs a boost. Despite the use of acid, my skin does not feel tight or dry following the use of this mask. I have not noticed any dry patches or irritation.
The results are long lasting, my skin feels soft and smooth for at least a week after using this, hence why I don't need o use it every week. Due to the results, I feel £30 for the 50ml of this mask is justified and will be happy to purchase it again in the future.
