Skin Ceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel
Advantages: Gorgeous to apply, leaves my skin visibly better
Disadvantages: Ridiculously expensive
Another Skin Ceuticals product I received as part of my competition win earlier this year was a small 30ml bottle of their Hydrating B5 Gel, while I don't really suffer with dry skin I do wear full make-up most days which leaches moisture from my skin so I was curious as to how this product would perform.
The gel is dispensed via a squeezy pipette, I don't usually like cosmetics which have this type of applicator but it's actually essential for this particular product as you only need two or three drops per application - and believe me, when you get to the end of this review and discover the price of this tiny wee bottle you'll praise god for the accurate pipette! It doesn't matter how much you initially squeeze into the pipette's tube as it's very easy to control the amount of drops that you dispense from it, although try not to be too heavy handed the first time you come to use it as you really do not want to waste a drop of this stuff!
The gel is quite thin, much thinner actually than I thought it would be. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though as it makes the gel very easy to spread across your skin, a thicker product would drag too much and you'd have to use much more to cover the same area. As it stands the consistency of the gel is absolutely perfect in my opinion.
Once you have dispensed your gel you simply sweep it across your skin in an upwards motion and allow it to absorb. The absorption rate is quite fast, it does leave a slight shine on my skin for a while afterwards but this isn't really a problem as I tend to apply it in the evening (Skin Ceuticals recommend using it once or twice a day), although I have used it in the morning and can assure you it's fine for applying make-up on top after just a few minutes.
Now, this isn't just a moisturiser. Skin Ceuticals claim that by using this product it will help your skin retain it's moisture better and also helps the hydrating properties of other products you use on top of it to work their magic. This isn't the sort of thing you can prove, but in this case I'm inclined to believe them as during the (crazy) hot spell in October this year I resorted to using a facial spritz due to the fact that a coinciding chest infection meant I felt like my whole head was going to explode in the heat. I was using a cheap Boots spritz which contained a small amount of moisturising capability; I've never been overly impressed with that side of the spritz, but after using it I was amazed at how much moisture my skin soaked up just from using this very basic spritz.
I could see the difference in the look and feel of my skin within just a few days of using this gel. Visually my skin looks pinker, plumper and more radiant and as far as the touchability factor goes my facial skin feels smoother - I wouldn't say it particularly has a softer feel but I can tell just by running my fingertips across my skin that it is generally healthier than before I started using the gel. I've noticed my skin tone looks brighter and the few enlarged pores I had developed closed up, admittedly in my case these were very minor problems but I definitely think this gel could help deal with more severe skincare issues. It's a gentle product but extremely effective; it sweeps so smoothly across my skin that the gel has a luxurious aspect to it, but the slick and slightly greasy gel also has quite a clinical feel.
I'm impressed. This is a quality product that actually does do good things for my skin. Now for the bummer news, this Skin Ceuticals gel costs an incredible £55 for the 30ml bottle. Wow. I know you only need to use a couple of drops at a time, but using it twice daily a bottle still wouldn't last long at all - I've only been using it for two months and already the bottle seems quite low, I won't be replacing it at that price though so will have to start searching for a more cost effective alternative.
Summary: An excellent product, let down by an unwarranted high price tag
