Review of Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion
(Please be aware that I have replicated ingredient and company ethics information from the packaging and the manufacturer website. This is clearly marked with asterisks!)
Some time ago I joined a consumer opinion group, mainly in order to complete surveys for money, but also to trial products. To be honest, apart from a couple of laundry products and a never to be forgotten ghastly tub of plasticky margarine, my product trialling experiences have been somewhat thin on the ground. Therefore I was very pleased when I was given the opportunity to trial this skin lotion earlier this year.
I received the skin lotion around a month ago. It was not presented in the packaging depicted by Dooyoo's photograph, but in 10 individual sachets, each holding enough for up to 3 applications.
~**About Shielding Lotions**~
I had never come across the term Shielding Lotion before and was interested to discover how the lotion would differ from my usual facial and body moisturising creams, butters and lotions.
Shielding lotions are basically a protective skin treatment. They provide a protective shield against environmental attack, providing skin repair and intense conditioning moisturisation. Shielding lotions reduce moisture loss from the deeper layers of the skin which in turn promotes skin repair and encourages the natural healing processes. Unlike conventional moisturisers which only lubricate and moisturise the outer skin layer, Shielding lotions bond with the skin and protect it for longer periods of time.
The manufacturer claims that the product is a moisturising sealant that allows your body to properly regulate the moisture environment of the skin. Skin MD also suggest that the outcome is a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and speedy recovery from cosmetic procedures and skin damage.
This lotion is designed for use on the face, hands and body. It is ideal for sensitive skin types and sun damaged skin. The lotion is also suitable to use with skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, skin allergies and other skin conditions.
As mentioned my Shielding Lotion was presented in individual sachets, not the bottle shown above. The sachets were easy to tear open and although each one was supposed to hold 3 applications, I feel this would not have been the case had the product been used all over the body. I decided to trial mine on my face and hands.
Although I suffer from contact dermatitis occasionally, I did not have any break outs during my trial period so my experience will focus on the product as a general purpose treatment rather than a product to soothe a skin condition.
I have sun damaged facial skin thanks to a youth spent living by the sea and the very rare use of sunscreen. In my defence, I was a teenager in the 70's and we aspired to the deeply tanned look, which given my skin type, I always achieved rapidly. Sun creams and similar products were usually used by those wishing to tan rather than protect in those days. How times have changed!
But I digress, back to the lotion!
The Skin MD Shielding lotion is a white, unscented lotion, it contains no sun screen, although the company do produce a version with a SPS15 for people who prefer this.
The texture of the lotion is strange, it is almost gel-like rather than creamy, and to be frank, I found this rather off putting at first. I felt it was not going to absorb well as the lotion seemed slightly globular and dense to the touch. My fears were unfounded however as the lotion did absorb well and very quickly, the heat from my skin seemed to enable the lotion to literally sink into my skin.
My facial skin felt wonderful after this lotion was applied, softer, smoother and very, very comfortable. I have used this when going bare faced and under make up with equally pleasing results. The lotion is undetectable in wear and it makes a good base layer. I usually apply this lotion in the mornings and by bed time, my skin still feels pretty good. I have not used this as a night cream, but see no reason why it should not be used overnight too.
My hands too are sun damaged and in addition they also have dry skin, a few dark patches, (ok age spots!) and quite a few ancient scars on the backs. This cream has really improved the condition of my hands, my skin feels much more supple and I think my hands look younger too after almost a month of using this treatment. As already stated, this lotion absorbs well, leaving no stickiness or tacky feeling.

**The basic goals that we had in formulating this product was to make it far more effective than any other moisturizing lotion or protective cream while making it as "natural" as practically possible and maintaining a price that was low enough that most people could afford to use it daily. We enlisted 9 cosmetic formulating chemists as well as dermatologists and other doctors over a 6 year period - rejecting more than 600 test batches before approving this formulation.**

In addition to the above information, the manufacturer advises that this product is free from colourants, parabens and fragrances. It is hypoallergenic, Dermatology tested and the formulation will not clog pores.
A report on the testing of this product can be viewed on the Skin MD website. 50 female volunteers underwent a 14 day clinical trial before the lotion was cleared for use. Skin MD do not use animal testing, a subject of great importance to me.
~**My Thoughts and Conclusion**~
This is a remarkable lotion. I have been very pleased with the results and I fully intend to purchase the product based on my trialling experience.
The lotion is available from various sources and a 120ml bottle retails for around £14. It is not the cheapest lotion on the market but in my view it is the best product I have come across in a very long time.
Of course, this may not appeal to those who want a scented or 'designer' product, it is definitely plain and simple, both in packaging and appearance, but it does the job it is designed to do really effectively.
If anyone is interested in trying this Shielding Lotion before buying there is a free sample link on the Skin MD website which offers a choice of samples, currently this lotion and a hand cream.
To conclude I cannot praise this highly enough, I am very impressed and would recommend to others with no hesitation.
Thank you for reading

Anyone with eczema knows the frustration of trying lots of "miracle cures" that don't actualy work. Usually, these "cures" are expensive and make fantastic claims. Sorry guys. There is no cure for eczema. Don't let any smooth talking salesmen or "health practitioner" tell you otherwise! I am very interested though, in developments in skincare, and keep abreast of things on a fantastic website called eczemavoice.com, which is a public forum and information site about the condition. This is where I first read about shielding lotions.
Shielding lotions are completely different to conventional moisturisers. For one thing, they are not heavy or greasy. They work by forming an invisible barrier on the surface of the skin, effectively keeping allergens and bad stuff out, and allowing your skin to moisturise itself by preventing the skin from becoming dehydrated and keeping the good stuff in.
One thing I really like about Skin MD shielding lotion, is that it is made with natural ingredients, unlike conventional moisurisers which nearly always contain liquid paraffin or white soft paraffin. I mean, do you really want to put petroleum on your skin? The ingredient list for Skin MD is heaven to read, with lots of good, nourishing ingredients and no nasties.
A 120ml bottle costs about £15, but lasts for ages, as a tiny drop of lotion spreads over a large area of skin. The barrier effect of the lotion lasts for about 4 hours before you need to reapply the lotion. When I first used the product over a year ago, I loved the feel of it on my skin, as it didn't feel sticky or greasy and was lovely and light and left my skin feeling silky smooth. For eczema sufferers it is very effective when used in conjunction with steroid creams, though you must remember to put the steroids on first, due to the barrier function of the cream.
Skin MD has enabled me to wear makeup again, and generally feel more "human". I can honestly say it is the most effective product I have ever used on my skin, and I buy a new bottle about every 3 months. Again, I stress that nothing can CURE eczema, but this stuff definitely helps me to cope with it. I just wish it was available on prescription!
