The ultimate anti-ageing moisturiser for men

I am constantly raving about Clinique's cosmetic range for women, but now is the time to enlighten all men! Clinique's skin care range for men is relatively new. Their "New Men Age Defense Hydrator SPF15" claims to help repair the look of lines and wrinkles, provide defence against future damage of sun and free radicals, and strengthen skin's moisture barrier function. This is the ultimate age-defying moisturiser for men. However, despite the proven science behind the benefits of moisturising', there is still this incessant male defensiveness towards cosmetics; that it is a ladies domain and would undermine their 'macho status'. Also, because men's skin tends to be oily, there is a common misconception that moisturising is not needed and would only propel problematic skin, even leading to acne and blemishes. However, the truth is that all skins need moisture, whether you are female or male. Furthermore, men that incorporate shaving into their daily routines, are more liable to moisture loss, as they are constantly stripping away layers of protective skin that is maintaining it's moisture. So men, I beg you, bring out your androgynous side! 'Metrosexuals' age more gracefully, and when you understand the science behind caring for your skin you will see why. First the most vital question:

Since my mother repeatedly nagged my father to moisturise, he has been using this product. Unlike most moisturisers he says, it isn't thick or oily. Instead, it just glides on, absorbs into the skin quickly and left his skin (for once) feeling smooth and hydrated. This is a dramatic change from someone who's skin would often be quite coarse and dry due to shaving daily (That's a nice way of putting it- rather his skin was shedding like a snakes before) . Healthy skin is the most important element of a great looking face and my father has definitely relished in the uncountable compliments he has had on his healthier skin, since using this product. Long term usage of this age-defying moisturiser has provided him with a more even and smooth skin tone, giving it a more healthier glow, and most strikingly, has irrefutably lessened significant lines and wrinkles.
Now for the science behind it and why using moisturiser is a MUST for all men.

A man's skin is approximately 20% thicker than a woman's and is generally more firmer due to a significantly higher amount of collagen and elastin levels within the skin. Men's skin is also about 20% oilier than women's with significantly larger pores. This all lies within the reason why men's skin retains its youthful appearance, without as many deep wrinkles and fine lines as women. However, the overall success of a man's wish to age more gracefully, lies within how well he maintains the healthiness of his skin over his lifetime. Shaving, exposure to the sun, smoking, drinking, stress and an unbalanced diet are a few of the extraneous factors that propel the intrinsic nature of ageing and contribute to dull, unhealthy, dry skin. Furthermore, even if you live a perfectly healthy lifestyle, laboratories confirm that even though men's skin age at a slower rate relative to women's skin, once men's skin DOES begin to age, the change is more drastic as it happens at a much greater rate and often (due to the lack of skincare), the damage is more visible. Therefore, don't take your skin for granted men! You may age at a slower rate, but if you ignore the needs for your skin then the negative outcome may be irrevocable.

There is a common misconception that moisturisers hydrate the skin. Your skin may feel 'smoother' due to the ingredients, but the role of a moisturiser is to lock in the skin's OWN moisture, which will prevent potential dryness and an unhealthy appearance. The skin's moisture levels need to be defended because glands under the skin produce oils that act as natural lubricants, but throughout the day we inevitably lose moisture within our skin from several factors including, the effects of hot or cold weather, from perspiration, bathing and shaving. So moisturiser acts as a barrier on the skin to prevent the potential, drastic moisture loss. Dry skin doesn't maintain moisture very well and so will only propel the effects of ageing.

Not only does this moisturiser act as a barrier on the skin to prevent moisture loss, but it also contains SPF15, a sunscreen, which acts as a barrier to the potentially harmful rays of the sun. This moisturiser protects from both UVB and UVA rays. What I didn't even know before my research behind the science of the product, was the difference between these two type of rays.
UVB RAYS- are the direct rays from the sun; they are the burning rays which can be detrimental to the skin.Although, Even on a cloudy day, up to 80% of the sun's ultraviolet rays can pass though the clouds.

UVA RAYS- are the ageing rays. Unlike UVB rays, they can pass through window glass and they penetrate deeper into the dermis, the thickest layer of the skin. This means that even when you are inside in the comfort of your own house, seemingly hidden away from the sun, you are STILL unprotected if you aren't wearing a moisturising sunscreen. All moisturisers should contain an SPF15 and Clinique have always been aware of this. As well as this product serving as a device to maintain a youthful appearance, it also protects you from the suns potential cancerous effects.

The active ingredients both help to prevent skin damage, and repair existing skin damage. This moisturiser contains certain patented sea extracts, including Red Microalgae Extract which helps to even skin tone and helps to diminish the looks of deep-set wrinkles and fine lines. The ingredients also help to stimulate the skins own collagen production, which in turn helps to repair damage and restores the skins firmness and elasticity. This ingredients are kind to sensitive skin and are chemical-friendly. Did you know that most brands contain chemicals which are detrimental to your skin, even leading to cancer. 60% of chemicals we use on our skin our permeated through our skin and into our bloodstream? Well if you didn't then it is about time to swat up on what chemicals are safe and what are not; because some cosmetics can do more bad for your skin than good!

The New Age Defense Hydrator SPF15 from the Clinque brand, is a must for all men. It prevents moisture loss, helping to build and strengthen the skin's moisture barrier function, and it's added sunscreen acts as a barrier to the harmful rays of the sun. It also helps existing lines and wrinkles and an unhealthy, uneven and dry skin tone. So men, give in to the science behind skin care, and moisture that skin!

N.B: As usual with Clinique, the usual disadvantage is the price. It is £24.47- but this lasts my father up to a good 6 months and feels the price is worth it. Visit the Clinique website for the other products in the men's skin care range, to use alongside this moisturiser. Bunged up, dry pores don't absorb moisturiser very well. So cleansing and exfoliation are also key to maintain healthy skin and prep your skin for moisturising to make it more effective.
