      Sophyto pH Optimizing Restorative Toner

Taking care of your skin can be hard work and I find that to get the best results I have to vary my skincare routine. I always use a toner after cleansing and have tried various types to suit different requirements, in particular I have been looking to try more natural and organic beauty products recently. I came across this Sophyto pH Optimizing Restorative Toner while shopping online and decided to give it a try. It costs RRP £13.00 for a 100ml bottle.

Product description: "Gently nourishes and restores skin to its optimal pH level, improving texture and hydration. Extracts from shitake fruit, nettle herb and elderberry combine to tone, purify and balance the skin. Free from artificial fragrance, colours, fillers and parabens."

The toner comes in a white plastic bottle which makes it impossible to see how much product is left inside, and for this reason I much prefer clear packaging. There is a pull-off lid covering a pop-out spout which you can dispense the toner from. I don't think this is the most effective form of packaging, as I often have to shake or squeeze the bottle to encourage the liquid to flow out through the little hole, which can result in it splashing out off-target, or completely saturating my cotton wool pad because too much has come out. My 100ml bottle lasted only a couple of months max with daily use, so the cost would quickly begin to add up if I decide to continue using this toner.

The toner has a liquid consistency and is a bright amber yellow colour, which I assume comes from the natural ingredients as no artificial colours are used. This is a Soil Association certified organic product made of 99% natural organic ingredients. I like to use natural and organic beauty products as they seem to be better quality and I don't have to worry about adding more chemicals into my body. With some other organic beauty products I have noticed they have an unpleasant fragrance, but the scent of this sophyto toner is rich and exotic with strong fruity notes from all of the natural extracts used.

Recommended directions for use: Use in place of water when cleansing or apply after cleansing to restore skin's pH balance.

Toning is a necessary step between cleansing and moisturising, and although this product can be used in place of water while cleansing I have opted to use my normal cleanser to remove make-up, and then apply this toner afterwards before moisturising. To use this I simply apply directly onto a cotton wool pad and sweep over my face until all of my skin has been covered. I have an oily T-zone but normal skin elsewhere, and can be prone to small outbreaks of spots and sensitivity. This toner feels very gentle on the skin and is not at all drying unlike some harsher toners which can strip away natural oils from the surface layer. After use my skin feels fully cleansed and in good condition. My skin feels soft to the touch, and slightly plumped as if the toner has a hydrating effect. It contains loads of natural ingredients including plant and fruit extracts, many of which I have seen recommended as homeopathic treatments for digestive complaints, and so I suspect their pH neutralising qualities are what also makes them so suitable for use in this skincare product. I feel like my skin has benefitted from using this toner and I have noticed that the increasing amount of effort that I am putting into my skincare routine really seems to be paying off. The only down side from my point of view is that because this toner feels so gentle on my skin it does not produce a cooling effect which can help to make tired skin feel refreshed and revived.

Overall I think this is a nice natural toner which seems to have worked effectively on my skin. The only disappointment is that it does not seem to give me that nice refreshed, cooling sensation that some other toners have, and I'm not certain if my pH level is really any more balanced although maybe I could test that if only I had some litmus paper!
