Advantages: Fantastic, quick cleansing of pores
Disadvantages: Packaging not particularly appealing, but that's just me
I'm not going to lie to you, I wouldn't have chosen to buy this face scrub under normal circumstances. I've tried several over the years but always go back to my favourite (Johnsons) and even though I'd seen this on the shelves lots of times I'd never been tempted to try it. I don't know why it didn't grab me, but it didn't. Maybe the packaging looked a bit fussier than I would normally be attracted to, although I like to think of myself as impervious to packaging!
So, in all honesty, the only reason I bought this was because there was literally no other option. We were in a small supermarket in a small town on holiday in America and I was in desperate need of a very good exfoliator for my face and this was the only choice available to me. I wouldn't say I was disappointed, per se, but I definitely would have chosen something else had there been any other brand available.
My problem was that it was extremely hot whilst we were on holiday and, being pale skinned with freckles, I was having to use a very high factor suncream which had a hideous affect on the skin around my nose, chin and forehead, which broke out into hundreds of tiny white spots. In an attempt to save suitcase space and weight, I hadn't taken my usual face scrub and I felt awful walking around with my face like that so rushed to the only shop in the village and grabbed this off the shelf. I couldn't tell you how much I paid for it but looking online it generally retails for about £4.00.
As I said, I try not to pay much attention to packaging, but if anything this tube sitting on a shelf with other scrubs would probably have seen me reaching for something else. With pictures of fruit and mountains and quite a lot of writing I find the tube very fussy really, preferring something plain and simple personally. However, one BIG plus point for me was that it has a flip top rather than a screw top, which imho ALL face washes/shower gels, moisturisers etc should have!
And when I went to use this face scrub I was further put off by the consistency of it. It's quite thick and feels very abrasive and I was very reluctant to lather it all over my face and rub it in! But, as I was desperate at the time, I gave it a go. I applied it to damp skin as per the instructions, massaged it over my face and rinsed off with cold water (I never use warm water when washing my face, only cold). The first thing I noticed was that the fragrance wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be, it was a nice subtly fruity apricoty fragrance...not too offputting at all! The second thing I noticed and was impressed by was how easy it was to rinse off. Usually with face scrubs I end up taking ages to rinse it from around my nose and around my eyes and frequently resort to using a flannel to get the worst ones off. But the St Ives one rinsed off easily with very little work at all.
Straight away after the first use I could tell the difference in my skin. The horrible spots hadn't disappeared but they were definitely a lot less noticeable and the rest of my skin felt lovely and soft and refreshed. I used it the following morning and again that evening and, miraculously, all my spots disappeared! I honestly couldn't believe it and was so relieved! You really would have had to see my skin to believe how bad it looked but within 36 hours of using this regularly it was totally transformed!
As I don't generally have many problems with my skin on a day to day basis I don't use this all the time because, as I said, it does feel quite abrasive and I prefer gentler scrubs with fresher fragrances. BUT I do always keep a tube of this in the bathroom cabinet for the summer time when I have to wear lots of suncream, or for cleaning my face after big nights out when I've worn lots of make up...or any other times my pores are likely to be more clogged than normal. For cleaning deep down into my pores I've never found anything better and, despite not liking to spend a lot of money on things like this, I would probably pay double the current retail price to keep one of these for back up and I will never be without it again!
Summary: Wouldn't be without it, worked miracles on my skin.
