“ Brand: The Body Shop / Type: Toner / What it does: Calms / Product line: The Body Shop Aloe „
I enjoy buying products from The Body Shop and have tried a number of their skincare products. Recently I purchased a set of miniatures made up of products from the Aloe skincare range. The Aloe range is designed for sensitive skin and, as the name suggests, contains aloe vera, known to hydrate and soothe skin. This review will discuss the Aloe Calming Toner.
***Price and Availability***
The toner costs £7 for a 200ml bottle and a 60ml bottle is also available as part of the set of miniatures. It is only available from The Body Shop, either in-store or online.
The toner comes in a clear plastic bottle made up of recycled, and recyclable, ingredients. It is easy to see how much product is left. The label is white and green to fit in with the other products in the range, and the aloe plant itself - a picture of the plant is present on the packaging. The miniature and full-size bottles are identical in design, both having flip-top lids. It is easy to get the toner out, as it has the consistency of water.
The aloe vera used by the Body Shop is grown without pesticides and is harvested, washed and processed by hand, without using preservatives. It is part of the brand's Community Trade range of ingredients, which means it is grown in a sustainable way and helps to provide an essential income for farmers in Guatemala, as well as assisting with materials for schools. Aloe vera gel is listed second on the ingredients list, suggesting that after water, it is included in the greatest quantity. This suggests that the product name is an accurate reflection of the product.
This toner is dermatologically tested and alcohol free for sensitive skin. The product is designed to be gentle on the skin while removing the last traces of makeup and cleanser. It is fragrance and colour free and contains no added preservatives. Aloe vera is meant to be very good for sensitive skin, which is why it is used in this range.
***Use of the Product***
I prefer to use a face wash in the shower in the morning, saving the cleansing and toning process for the evening. Therefore I used this toner only at night. To use the product, I put some on a cotton wool pad and wiped it over my face, after using cleanser and before applying the night cream.
I found this toner very pleasant to use. It had a slightly thicker consistency than most toners (probably because of the aloe vera gel) and felt gentle and soothing on the skin. It was pleasant to use and didn't irritate my skin at all. The toner effectively removed last traces of makeup and cleanser. The small bottle of toner has lasted me around a month, which isn't bad at all, so it's better value for money than might be expected.
This is a very good toner which is good for sensitive skin. The aloe vera is gentle and soothing and marks this toner out from other products. However, it is a bit pricey compared to brands such as Simple, so I have removed one star.
I cleanse, tone and moisturise twice daily to keep my skin in its best condition and, for the past couple of years, I've stuck to the same three products to do this with. Of course, I do love the products I normally use and have no complaints with them but I just fancied trying something new and different and so, when I recently got hold of a code which allowed me to receive a 40% discount from purchases from The Body Shop I decided to give their aloe skincare range a try.
I opted for the Aloe range above the many other choices because this was the one suited to sensitive skin and my face is extremely sensitive. This is mainly the reason I've stuck to the same products for so long, when I finally found something that didn't upset my skin and I just stuck with it and I'm normally very nervous about trying new products on my face. I've learnt from experience that just because the packaging of a product states it's suitable for sensitive skin doesn't always mean my skin won't react with it. Still, The Body Shop is a brand name I completely trust so I felt a lot more as ease giving this toner a try.
The toner comes in a 60ml bottle for £3 or a 200ml bottle for £7. The bigger bottle does offer a better deal but I went for the smaller bottle for two reasons. Firstly, even with my 40% off the 200ml bottle still cost £4.20 which is a little too much for me to completely waste if, for whatever reason, I didn't like this toner. Secondly, I go to the gym most days either before and after work and so I tend to apply all my lotions and potions after my shower there as it's always pretty early or quite late in the day. These smaller bottles are just much more practical to carry around with me.
The toner comes in a clear plastic bottle which is just smaller or bigger depending on the size you purchase. The bottle allows you to see how much toner you have left which is obviously very handy if you plan on replacing it. The bottle has a semi opaque flip top lid and the bottle contains a little product information as well as the green The Body Shop logo in the top left hand corner.
As the toner is catered for sensitive skin it is fragrance, colour and alcohol free and the toner resembles water really. It's a clear liquid which has a very slight scent of Aloe Vera which I find to be quite pleasant. I always find the scent to be quite an earthy, natural scent which feels clean and refreshing and much nicer than synthetic scents. The Aloe Vera contained in this toner is both fair trade and organic so it's a friendly product! The sales of this product, and others from this range, generate income to farmers in developing countries and has even helped to supply schools with learning materials. If like me you refuse to use anything that's come into contact with an animal in a lab, you'll be pleased to know The Body Shop are completely against animal testing so in those respects, this is lovely helpful product typical of The Body Shop.
Using the toner is simple. You just flip open the lid, pour a little onto a cotton face pad and then apply in circular motions after cleansing. And it really works! The toner gets rid of all make-up, dirt and other impurities and residue left from different products seemingly effortlessly. I only tend to go around my face twice as this is enough to get rid of everything I don't want on my face. Because there are no added preservatives in this toner I know its not stripping my face of the things that should be there either. Applying this toner leaves my skin feeling cool, refreshed, clean and ready for moisturiser. It's a really gentle and effective product that doesn't cause my skin any irritation whatsoever. I don't have a bad word to say about this toner and I'll definitely be replacing my current bottle when it's all gone. It's a little more expensive than I usually pay but definitely worth it and I highly recommend it.
I purchased a 200ml bottle of this for £7.00 after being advised by a store assistant that it would be perfect for my irritated skin.
The toner looks like water and it has the same consistency as water. The smell of the toner is pleasant. It has a mild floral scent to it that's gentle and not overpowering.
The toner is to be applied to the skin with cotton wool after cleansing. I find the toner easy to use and it removes the last few traces of cleanser that have been left behind on your skin.
The toner feels lovely and refreshing on your skin. It's both soothing and calming. It helps to soothe itchy and/ or irritated skin that's prone to spots and blemishes. The toner also helps to calm the skin down if it is suffering from sunburn yet it also helps to refresh hot and tired skin. You can always decant some of the toner into a smaller spray bottle, keep it in the fridge and spritz it over your face as needed.
The toner lasts ages as a small amount goes far and it keeps well too. To achieve the best results I would suggest using the toner alongside the rest of the Aloe range as the Aloe products seem to work better when they are used together.
A simple toner for troubled skin.
I have previous reviewed two of the products from The Body Shop Aloe skincare range, which are suited for those with sensitive skin. My first experience of this range was almost two years ago where I have since purchased a gift set containing four smaller versions with this review discussing my experience with using the Calming Toner.
~~ APPEARANCE OF THE PRODUCT ~~
My smaller 60 ml transparent plastic bottle is identical in appearance to the full size version and that is clean, fresh and calming and as a result, this product is very appealing to the eye. There is a small amount of text advising that the toner is comforting and conditioning and that the liquid is proven to purify without irritation. Whilst the toner is clear in colour it sometimes gives the illusion of being of a pale green in certain lights, which is due to the reflection from the label.
~~ USING THE TONER ~~
As with the entire range of Aloe skincare products, the toner is fragrance, alcohol and colour free. The plastic lid easily flips open to reveal a good sized opening to dispense the liquid onto a cotton wool ball, which I apply after having thoroughly cleansed my skin. The liquid is wonderfully cooling as soon as contact is made and despite having previously cleansed I will often witness a small amount of grime on the cotton wool. During the hot summer months I choose to keep some of my skin products in the fridge because as well as cooling my rather uncomfortable hot skin, their coldness assists in tightening the pores.
The toner dries almost instantly and unlike some brands that I've used in the past, there is no dryness or tightness. I have always favoured using toners because as well as being intended to remove any remaining traces of make-up and cleanser, they prime the skin in readiness for my moisturising products and assist in tightening the pores. It is very difficult to evidence if these types of products actually work, but they are firm favourites in my twice-daily beauty regime and this is one that I can definitely recommend. Whilst I have stated that the toner does not cause any dryness to my skin I will always complete my regime by applying moisturiser to ensure that my skin receives sufficient hydration. This is a gorgeous toner, as in my experience it is effective and leaves my skin feeling clean and fresh as well as soft and smooth without any sticky residue. Consequently, it receives 5 stars from me.
~~ INGREDIENTS AND OTHER INFORMATION ~~
As my 60 ml bottle was contained within a gift set, the ingredient lists is provided on a cardboard tag, which was attached to the zip of the bag. I do not believe in copying long lists of ingredients into my reviews, but have discussed those that I believe to be of importance and would advise that the key ingredient is Community Fair Trade organic aloe vera. The toner should be used within 6 months of opening and the bottle can be recycled after use. The bottle should last approximately eight weeks with twice daily usage.
~~ PRICE AND AVAILABILITY ~~
The Body Shop Aloe Calming Toner is available in two sizes, namely a 60 ml bottle for £3 and a 200 ml bottle for £7 or you can opt to purchase the Aloe Skincare Kit for £10 where for £10 you will receive a 60 ml bottle of this toner, a 60 ml bottle of Calming Facial Cleanser, a 15 ml tub of Soothing Day Cream and a 15 ml tub of Soothing Night Cream.
I hope you found my review useful and would thank you for reading.
My complexion seems to be going through a transitional phase as I am finally growing out of my spotty teenager skin at the grand old age of 25. I'm still trying to figure out what products work best for my skin, and I'm experimenting my way through various facial skin care ranges to try and see what works for my fussy skin. I vary from combination to oily/combination and occasionally sensitive, so it's hard work finding a cleansing routine that fits my needs, especially when taking seasonal factors into account.
I was recommended this toning liquid by a member of The Body Shop staff who was trying to help me choose something suitable. The Aloe Calming Toner is available from The Body Shop high street stores and online at www.thebodyshop.co.uk in two different sized bottles. A 60ml bottle will set you back £3.00, and it costs £7.00 for a 200ml bottle. You get a saving if you buy the bigger bottle, but the smaller bottle is still a good price and I wish I had bought this smaller size to test the product out before buying the full size.
Product description: "Comforting, conditioning toning liquid proven to purify without irritating. Instantly soothes and calms skin, while removing impurities and excess traces of cleanser. With Community Trade aloe vera. Preservative free, fragrance free, colour free, alcohol free. Helps prepare skin to better absorb Aloe moisturiser."
Toning is a necessary step between cleansing and moisturising and this toner did a good job of removing any last traces of make-up or cleansing products. In fact it was quite shocking to see how much residue can be left behind even after cleansing. To use this, I simply pour some onto a cotton wool pad and then wipe over my skin. I usually have to use quite a lot per application to cover the whole area of my face and neck. The 200ml bottle has lasted me around four months with daily usage.
I found that this did not seem to moisturise, but equally it didn't strip away any natural oils from the surface of the skin either. I tend to get oily patches develop during the day and using this toner did not keep them at bay, and as is often the case my skin starts pumping out the oil again by the time the afternoon comes around. On the plus side my skin did feel very clean and soft afterwards and it was a good stage of preparation before applying my moisturiser. It felt very gentle and cooling on my skin, but it was not as refreshing as the others I have tried and I did not feel like my skin was any more toned or tauter. My pores are naturally quite open on some areas of my face and this toner did not help to close them or tone the kin to produce a smoother flawless looking finish.
The natural ingredients include soothing aloe vera and moisturising glycerine which are perfect for using on sensitive skin. There is no fragrance so it feels very light when using it, and there are none of the potentially irritating ingredients found in other stronger toners. The ingredients are very few and very basic, including natural aloe vera gel and it's great that this contains no harsh chemicals that strip your skin bare like some of the stronger toning fluids can.
I think this is a fair product that would work well for those with sensitive skin that need a gentle product, but I need something a bit stronger that will work harder to remove oils and tighten my pores. I will continue my search for a better toner!
Ingredients: Aqua (Water) (Solvent/Diluent), Aloe barbadensis (Aloe Vera Gel) (Skin Soothing Agent), Pentylene Glycol (Solvent), Butylene Glycol (Humectant), Sorbitol (Humectant), Glycerin (Humectant).
The Body Shop are against animal testing, please keep your beauty cruelty free!
I have only recently started to use toners, I never used to bother as I thought they were unnecessary but I started to try a few in the past year to remove traces of makeup that I realised were left over after cleansing.
I like my toners to be very gentle and alcohol free as I hate the thought of products stripping my skin. I had read about the aloe range from The Body Shop before and that the products were very gentle so I headed down to my local store to pick up a bottle of the toner.
This toner comes in a sturdy plastic 200ml bottle which has a green tinge. It has a flip top lid which can be unscrewed and has a white and green label on the front and back. I personally find the packaging a little boring but that's just my personal opinion! The toner itself is actually colour free and is unfragranced, it is also preservative free, alcohol free and doesn't have a long list of ingredients. The label says that the toner is made with community trade aloe vera and instantly soothes and calms skin while removing impurities and traces of cleanser. It also says that the toner helps prepare skin to better absorb moisturiser.
Having used this toner for around two weeks now, I would say that it does everything it says it does! It is indeed gentle and makes my skin feel fresh and soft after use with no tightness at all. It removes left-over makeup and you only need a small amount on a cotton pad so the bottle should last a long time. The toner makes my face feel lightly hydrated after use too which is a bonus.
The Body Shop markets this toner as ideal for sensitive skin but I think it will suit any skin type as it is gentle and non-irritating. I have oily/combination skin and it suits me just fine. The toner costs £7.00 from The Body Shop which isn't cheap but should last a long time. However, there is also a 60ml bottle available for £3.00 so I would recommend that you buy that one first to save some pennies.
Overall, I would recommend this toner to anyone who wants a gentle, everyday toner with no fuss.
Price: £3 for 60ml
£6.35 for 200ml
From: The Body Shop
For: Conditioning and preparing skin to absorb moisturisers
The packaging is nice and simple, clean and plain, but with that high quality look and feel of most Body Shop products. It's a plastic bottle with a flip top lid. the lid fastens tightly so there's no real chance of spills if you want to take it away with you.
It's a watery liquid with a fresh aloe scent that is neither strong nor overpowering. It's easy to get just the right amount out of the bottle, then all you need to do is sweep it across the face with a cotton wool pad.
It feels cool and refreshing on the skin and when you look at the amount of dirt on the cotton pad you can see that it's really doing it's job to remove any leftover dirt and grime after cleansing.
Usually when I use a toner I find that it can leave my skin feeling quite tight and often dry it out with regular use, but this one is alcohol-free and really gentle on the skin so there's none of that with this one. It's really gentle and soothing on the skin, and it leaves it feeling fresh and clean, and surprisingly soft.
As well as effectively removing last traces of makeup and dirt, it really does prepare the skin for moisturiser, tightening pores and smoothing and softening, allowing your moisturiser to sink in much more easily.
All in all this is a very nice toner.
Thumbs up from me.
This is a simple, mid-priced alcohol-free toner which doesn't make any great claims beyond calming and conditioning the skin while preparing it for moisturiser. It lives up to those admittedly modest claims.
The standard size is a tall slim plastic 200ml bottle with the usual Body Shop branded flip top. The label is white with a pale green leaves design and the bottle is tinted plain green. The overall effect looks calming and cooling, although the tinted bottle hides the true colour of the product. The 60ml travel size product comes in a clear bottle so you can see the product istelf is absolutely colourless. Now I know this is a good thing because less colouring means less ingredients to react to. Also the active ingredients (Aloe gel and glycerine) are colourless so the product probably will be colourless! But I did find the product looked, smelled and felt so much like plain water it felt a bit like I was paying £6 for water! How marketing brainwashes us to expect highly coloured, scented products.
The plastic bottle is light and unbreakable and is also recyclable. Body Shop's standard flip top made it fairly easy to dispense the product on a cotton wool ball but it occasionally dispenses too much.
You know how to use a toner I'm sure and this is no different. Simply sweep it across the skin on a cotton wool ball or pad. Use after cleanser and before moisturiser. In use it feels... well, of nothing to be honest. Maybe the products I've used in the past have been too harsh, so I was maybe expecting a tingle.
Skin felt smooth but it wasn't anything particularly special. The fact that it doesn't irritate my skin at all though is something special in itself.
Price/value for money
£6 is not the cheapest for a toner but it's not the most expensive by far. At the rate I'm using it, twice a day, it will last about 3 months and will work out at about 3p per use.
Would I buy again?
I think this is going to be a standby - nothing exciting, but I can rely on it not to irritate my skin. Will buy again.
My skin can be sensitive with the changes in the weather so when I purchased this product I was quite apprehensive that it might cause a flare up. So you can imagine I was really pleased when after a week my skin didn't break out.
This product contains Aloe Vera which has a soothing effect on skin and can calm any allergic reactions. I am the Mrs Allergic and is sometimes over cautious when purchasing any product for sensitive skin. I was pleasantly surprised when my skin felt soothed and the itchy had stopped. It is alcohol free, most of Body Shop products don't contain alcohol which great.
With some toners I find they can be quite drying. I tend to use the Vitamin E in winter and this toner in summer as it has a fresh feeling to it. A bottle lasts me 3/4 months and I tend to apply it neat onto the skin as I find that the product works best that way rather than watered down on a cotton pad. It also lasts longer.
Overall a fantastic toner for all skin types but particulary Sensitive skin.
THE BODY SHOP
The body shop was founded by a lady Anita Roddick, who has dedicated her life to producing top quality beauty products and cosmetics. She has been part of the world's fair trade association and also helped change thousands of people's lives around the world.
Not only are the body shop associated with the fair trade association, but they are also connected with awareness for young HIV sufferers and cruelty against animals.
Over the past few decades Anita has completed outstanding work and got given the title Dame Anita Roddick. But sadly Anita died in September 2007 at the age of 62, but the body still lives on in her memory.
ALOE CALMING FACIAL TONER
I was first introduced to this product, after I had been using the calming cleanser for a few months. I have very sensitive skin and I became dependent on the cleanser, as it really worked and didn't cause my skin to flare up.
I went to my local body shop to buy another bottle of the cleanser, when the body shop consultant came over and started to hard sell me the toner and moisturiser, which will compliment the cleanser I was already using. I was very reluctant to buy the toner as my skin is very temperamental, and I didn't want to irritate it.
However the cleanser cost 6.00, the toner costs 6.00 and the moisturisers costs 8.00 per tube. So all in all it was twenty pounds for all three, but they had an offer of all three for fifteen pounds plus I got an extra 10% off. So I was eventually getting them all for 13.50, which was a bargain so I decided to buy it anyway.
After i had cleansed my skin, I then applied the toner which was very refreshing as didn't irritate my skin at all. I could really feel it sinking into my pores and it did sting for a while until the product was fully absorbed.
The toner is designed for sensitive and over sensitive skin, and I have to say it seems to be very kind to the skin and has never ever caused me any irritation. I have found it to be very refreshing leaving my skin felling rejuvenated after use.
As I said I got this of offer, but usually you will pay 6.00 per bottle from any body shop store.
The toner itself comes in a green see through 200ml bottle, with a flip cap to stop any of the liquid escaping, so you can take this away with you and you will not have to worry about the liquid escaping and ruining your bag or clothing.
Before you can apply the toner you need to remove and eye makeup and face make up, then you need to cleanse your face with the aloe calming cleanser, it is recommended you use the aloe cleanser for the full benefits, but it is not essential.
Now using a damp cotton wool pad, a damp one is better as you can apply the product to your face without having to pick cotton wool from it afterwards, plus I find that you don't need to use as much toner. The toner is always the product that you have to replace first as it always seems to run out quicker than the rest.
After you have dampened the cotton pad apply the toner to the pad, you need to use enough product that the pad feels heavier that before. Then starting as the eyes wipe the pad around your whole face and neck, until the pad dries out.
After you have toned if you look at the pad you will see little bits that have come from your pores, this lets you know that the products is really working.
When the toner has been applied you may feel a stinging sensation, this is normal it is just where the product is penetrating the pores in your skin.
Once you have toned your skin, you can moisturise with the body shops aloe moisturiser.
All of the ingredients within this product come from natural sources.
Aloe, Aloe barbadensis, Pentylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Sorbital and Glycerin
The Aloe Vera in this toner comes from the el Progreso region of Guatemala, It is all hand collected, hand washed and hand prepared. This is all done within 12 hours of the aloe harvesting.
Everything is done in 12 hours, to prevent any adulterations to the natural purity of the Aloe. This is produced with the highest quality aloe Vera.
As I said I was very sceptical about trying this new toner, but for the price I thought it was worth a try as the cleanser worked really well for my skin. So for the bargain price of 13.50 I managed to grab all three products.
I am so glad I have found this aloe Vera range, as it really improves my skin and I have never had a flare up since using the products. So I am really pleased as they are not overly expensive.
After I have used the products my skin instantly feels clean, fresh and rejuvenated, which was something I had never experienced before I was introduced to this body shop range.
When I first applied the toner I did get a little frightened as my skin seemed to sting, I thought that I had pushed it at this stage, but it was only until the toner was absorbed. The stinging stop and I have since found out that this is completely normal.
I would advise anyone who has sensitive skin to try these products, they have really changed my life and I can now wear makeup, providing I don't do so for long periods of time anyway.
As long as I remove all traces of makeup I am fine, I no longer have to worry about flare ups.
