The Body Shop Organic Cotton Rounds
Advantages: Really soft and light, do the job they're supposed to and allow no leaks when applying toner!
Disadvantages: Perhaps the price to some although I personally don't see it as a problem.
I recently got hold of a discount code which allowed me to get 40% off purchases from The Body Shop and subsequently I decided to treat myself to a new skincare range. To go with these new skincare products I decided I would purchase The Body Shop organic cotton face rounds as well. I find the cheap supermarket branded cotton rounds I've been using for a long time to be increasingly frustrating making my daily skincare routine more of an annoyance than anything else. They fall apart and curl themselves up into shapes which I cannot work with when faced with the simple task of performing a circular motion. They absorb too much of my cleanser and moisturiser meaning I have to apply extra in order to give my face and neck the coverage it needs and they don't absorb enough toner leaving most of it to be wasted dripping down my hand and onto the floor. I have to double them up and replace them every five seconds and they just make the whole process longer, more wasteful and more annoying than it should be.
It was because of this I decided to try better quality cotton rounds and these certainly are just that! The better quality, however, does come at a price. These face rounds cost £2.50 for a pack of 100 which, compared to my usual £1 for a pack of 200 is quite an extortionate price. Fortunately The Body Shop website constantly have promotions on enabling discounts or free products and these are certainly something I will be stocking up on in future during these times. As I will explain later in this review, I do believe these are saving me money in the long run anyway so the price doesn't really seem all that unreasonable.
These cotton face rounds are available both online and instore and they come stacked up on top of each other creating a tower of cotton rounds in a sturdy, relatively thick plastic covering. Even the packaging seems to be of better quality than supermarket own brands. They come sealed at the top with a drawstring closing so you can continue to close up the bag after the initial seal has been broken so they don't fall out and get lost when you're not using them. The closing is very sturdy as well, the top of the packaging has never come undone and the string has never snapped or worn down. The packaging contains the usual green The Body Shop logo with the product name written at the bottom. Underneath this it is stated that these are made from 100% organic cotton and that they're soft and gentle on the skin. The back of the packet tells us why these pads are made from organic cotton. Apparently cotton is one of the most chemical-intensive crops which releases 16% of the words insecticides. Farming for cotton organically uses more natural and traditional methods thus it's better for communities and the soil. It's nice to use products which are friendly to the planet. The Body Shop are against animal testing so these are also friendly to the animals we share this planet with. These are all round do gooders really!
And it gets better! These cotton rounds are perfect in every way. They're white in colour and, as the name suggests, round. They're beautifully soft and actually a fair bit thinner than I was expecting. These pads are double sided, a smooth side which I use to cleanse and moisturise and a textured side, a sort of criss cross type pattern, which I use to tone. There appears to be stitching around the edges of these cotton rounds and, if you pull these two sides apart, you discover rather a lot of compressed cotton wool. There is a fair bit of cotton in just one of these little rounds and once you've pulled it all away it's hard to see how they managed to get these so thin in the first place. You're definitely getting your money's worth here and you only have to touch the pads to see that these really are 100% cotton - there's no hidden extras here. They feel completely different (in a very good way) to cheap supermarket versions and the softness of these makes it almost a pleasure to run these across your skin.
When using cheap alternatives I got through countless amounts of these every time I cleansed, toned and moisturised. Cheap as they are, I was still replacing them on a fortnightly basis which, when there's 200 in a pack, is far too often in my opinion and all adds up! With The Body Shop's version, I use two during my skincare routine. I manage to cleanse and tone using the same pad, I just flip it over and use the other side. I use considerably less product too. Cleanser and moisturiser is transferred onto my face easily and quickly without the pads soaking up way too much. Even with the smooth side a little damp from the cleanser, my toner still doesn't drip through the textured side of these pads and what I put on the pad, goes on my face. It's great! Using less product means I'm saving myself some money. The skincare products I use are a lot more expensive to replace than these pads and so I'd rather be saving money in that department. I am of course, replacing these a lot less then I replaced the cheaper versions too.
The softness of these pads means they're gentle on my skin and cause no irritation whatsoever. Quite the opposite is true really, rubbing these on my face feels extremely nice and pleasant. In short, these are perfect and I really don't know why I didn't switch to them sooner. They may cost extra but they do allow money to be saved. They're environmentally friendly, support people in developing countries and do the job they're supposed to do a million times better than other cotton rounds I have tried. If you're a person who uses face rounds a lot then I'd definitely recommend switching to these, it's completely worth it.
Summary: A really great product for every day use. I cannot fault them.
