The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil Toner
Advantages: refreshing and makes my skin feel clean
Disadvantages: strong scent, have actually had more spots than usual when using this
My complexion seems to be going through a transitional phase as I am finally growing out of my spotty teenager skin now I've reached my mid-20's. I'm still trying to figure out what products work best for my skin, and I'm experimenting my way through various facial skin care ranges to try and see what works for my fussy skin. I vary from combination to oily/combination and occasionally sensitive, so it's hard work finding a cleansing routine that fits my needs, especially when taking seasonal factors into account.
I was recommended this toning liquid by a member of The Body Shop staff who was trying to help me choose something suitable. The Tea Tree Oil Toner is available from The Body Shop high street stores and online at www.thebodyshop.co.uk. It comes in a 250ml size bottle and costs £4.50, which is a reasonable price for this type of product.
Product description: "This refreshing toner for blemished skin gives a beautifully matte, shine-free finish.
+ Removes traces of make-up, cleanser and impurities
+ Mattifying powders leave skin shine-free
+ Clinically proven to give clearer-looking skin"
Toning is a necessary step between cleansing and moisturising and this toner did a good job of removing any last traces of make-up or cleansing products. This toner is a bit different than usual, and when looking in the bottle it almost looks as if it's gone off, as there what looks like a grimy layer at the bottom of the bottle where part of the mixture settles. The directions state: "Apply after cleansing and before moisturising. Shake to activate the mattifying powders and apply a generous amount to a cotton pad. Sweep across the face and neck." It is really important to remember to shake the bottle before pouring the toner out, and after I've mixed it up I then simply pour some onto a cotton wool pad and then wipe over my skin. I usually have to use quite a lot per application to cover the whole area of my face and neck, but the 250ml bottle has lasted me around six months with daily usage.
I found that this toner made my skin did feel very clean and refreshed. It is a nice step in between cleansing and moisturising, and it does help my skin to feel clearer and cleaner after using it, but it did not seem to have any actual toning effect. My pores are naturally quite open on some areas of my face and this toner did not help to close them or tone the skin to produce a smoother flawless looking finish. Instead, I have actually started using another Body Shop product in addition to my usual make-up, which is a primer base that helps to give my skin a smooth finish and reduce the visibility of my pores.
The natural ingredients include Community Fair Trade organic tea tree oil, witch hazel, and white willow extract. The scent of the tea tree oil is very strong. The smell is pungent when applying and it is not a very nice sensation when using it, as it can seem a bit overpowering and harsh. Tea tree and witch hazel are well known for their antibacterial and healing properties, and they are widely used in many anti-blemish remedies and treatments. Unfortunately for me, I did not notice any benefits in this area, and rather surprisingly I actually found that I have had more frequent spot outbreaks than I had previously when using other products. My skin is prone to oily patches and this did not lessen with using this toner.
I think this is an overrated product that doesn't actually perform in the way that I would expect it to. Although it helps my skin to feel clean and refreshed, it leaves me with open pores and I have been plagued with ever-more frequent spots. Added to that, the overbearing scent of tea tree oil is just too much for me. I couldn't recommend this one and I am still continuing my search for a better toner!
