Advantages: Balances skin tone - made skin appear slightly clearer, reasonably priced, easy to use, smells nice
Disadvantages: Brief burning sensation, had no effect on my spots
I love The Body Shop stuff and for Christmas recieved a gift voucher, which I spent last weekend on lots of goodies! One of the things that I picked up was this, the Tea Tree toner. I bought this purely because I have tried all of the other products in the body shop's tea tree range and have been highly impressed, so thought this would be worth a try. The toner is £4.50 for a 250ml bottle. I personally think that this does seem quite expensive for a medium sized bottle of product, however a little goes a long way and you only need a few large drops of the product to completely soak a pad of cotton wool in the liquid, and I only need two pads of cotton wool to do the whole of my face and neck.
The toner comes packaged in a transparent, sturdy plastic bottle which has a slightly rounded shape to it. The bottle has a flip lid and the liquid is dispensed through a small hole in the top, I do think that this packaging is quite practical and the small hole dispenses it carefully meaning the product doesn't pour out rapidly and therefor none goes to waste. The only branding on the bottle is a thin plastic type label wrapped around the middle of it, this simply has the body shop logo and the brand name. The label's colour scheme is predominantly green (to go with the tea tree theme) with white font which is easy to read. As the bottle is transparent the light green liquid can be seen through the bottle, and I also noticed that there is often quite alot of frothy white slime like residue settled at the bottom. This residue is actually 'mattifying powders' which are activated once the bottle has been shaken and it dissapears and mixes into the green liquid once shaken, creating a creamier looking liquid.
The lengthy list of ingredients is stated on the back, with the key ingredients being:
- Community Fair Trade Organic Tea Tree Oil
- Witch Hazel
- White Willow Extract
The Body Shop claim that this toner is refreshing, is able to remove impurities and say that it gives blemished skin a beautifully matte, shine-free finish. They also state that the toner:
- Removes traces of make-up, cleanser and impurities
- Mattifying powders leave skin shine-free
- Clinically proven to give clearer-looking skin
Using the toner is easy, I apply mine after cleansing and before moisturising. I simply shake the bottle and then apply a few drops onto a cotton pad which is easy as the consistency is just like water so the pad soaks it up completely very quickly. I then wipe around my face with it, making sure I focus on my problem areas (spot prone areas such as my cheeks and chin). I make sure that I avoid my eyes, due to it containing tea tree oil (which stings, alot!) I also use this on my neck. I do this twice daily; once in the morning and once before bed, and I have found that it's weirdly refreshing and relaxing! For example in the morning it makes me feel really refreshed and wakes me up, while at night it makes me feel calm and relaxed. The toner can also be used to remove makeup such as concealer and foundation, I use a wet wipe to remove my makeup and this toner manages to get rid of any last traces. Overall though it is so easy to use, it takes literally 2 minutes and leaves my skin feeling soft, smooth and most importantly cleansed.
I bought this product mainly because I am in love with The Body Shop's tea tree range, and really wanted to try this out, and partly because I am currently heavily pregnant and my hormones seem to be going bezerk. I'm never been particullary prone to spots however in the past few months I have had my fair share - especially around my chin. I am extremely self concious and hate having any sort of blemish (especially on my face!) and thought that using this toner may be of help as it contains not only tea tree oil, but also witch hazel which is another one of the main reasons why I bought it. Unfortunetly I don't think this toner really has any effects on spots, not mine anyway! It doesn't seem to reduce redness, nor does it dry the spots up, so if you want a toner that gets rid of spots/clears them up, I would not reccomend this toner.
The smell definetly isn't what I expected it to be like, it is quite strong and doesn't smell like my other (Superdrug) Tea Tree toner. I personally think this smells quite sweet, it also has a hint of lemony scent in it which I like, and I also like that the smell doesn't linger. The smell is refreshing and it's pleasant and not over the top. After using this toner on either my face or neck, my skin does feel instantly fresh, however this toner doesn't give that 'cooling' sensation that most tea tree products usually give, instead it actualy made my skin feel as if it was burning up, I know this sounds very unpleasant but the sensation subsided after a minute or so and my skin doesn't actually appear red or irritated. Obviously the fact that my sensetive skin had this reaction concerned me, however my friend agreed that it had the same effect on her and her skin didn't appear red either, and the feeling isn't particullary unpleasant or off putting for me personally.
Overall, this toner isn't really great, but I do reccomend it. It is great at removing the last traces of foundation, and it's also refreshing, smells nice and leaves my skin feeling smooth and clean. I don't really think it has any mattifying effects personally as I have dry skin which isn't greasy, however everyones skin is different so for someone with oily skin this may be of help. The 'burning up' sensation may not happen to everyone however I imagine the fact that it had this effect on my skin may put some of you who are reading this review off a bit! The toner is reasonably priced and a little goes a long way. I do think it keeps my skin looking clean, fresh and it's definetly made my skin tone look slightly less patchy (my cheeks recently became slightly more red for some bizzare reason however this toner seems to of calmed them down) and I give this product 3/5 stars.
Summary: Average!
