“ Brand: The Sanctuary / Type: Face Mask / Skin type: for dry skin and for all types / What it does: Detoxes, „
Once or twice a week I like to use a face mask along with my usual daily skin care routine just to freshen up my facial skin a little more. I usually use Lush fresh face masks as I really love the results these give but not too long ago I spotted a sachet of this Sanctuary face mask in my local Boots store and decided to give it a try instead. I got two goes out of the sachet and quickly returned to Boots to purchase a bigger tube of it as I liked it so much.
This Five Minute Thermal Detox Mask is described as being a 'deep cleanse facial' and a 'warming charcoal treatment for perfectly clean and purified skin'. I would normally be hesitant to buy any skin care product I didn't already have experience with as the skin on my face is so sensitive 90% of what I try tends to irritate it. The little experience I have with Sanctuary products, however, is entirely good and this mask just lured me in; I couldn't help but risk it.
The mask can be purchased from Boots and is available in either a 15ml sachet for £3 or a 100ml tube for £8.50.
The mask comes in a dark grey packaging, either rectangular sachet or tall tube standing upside down on its blue flip top lid. In white writing the Sanctuary logo can be found along with the product name and plenty of information about it. On the back we get an ingredients list, a little information about the Sanctuary brand, directions for use and a 'therapist tip'. This one states to use different masks on different areas of the face depending on your skins needs. For example, use this one on congested areas such as nose, forehead and chin whilst using a moisture boosting mask on drier areas.
The actual product is pretty much the exact same colour as its packaging. A dark grey colour with a tiny hint of blue - quite a pretty colour actually. It's relatively thick in consistency. Whilst it is easily squeezed out of its tube if you were to put a big dollop on your hand and turn it upside down then the mask wouldn't budge.
It doesn't smell too great. It's a very difficult scent to describe, perhaps a little like clay but it also reminds me of old, dried up play dough in terms of scent. Fortunately the scent is really quite weak and I find you can only smell it if you make a conscious effort to so I can forgive its scent for good results.
Using the mask is done in the usual way. Cleanse the skin, removing any make-up, dirt etc and then apply a thin layer over damp face and neck. 'Allow [the mask] to warm and cool naturally while you relax for five minutes' and then rinse off. I tend to apply mine in the bath after using a face wash.
You feel the mask instantly warm up the moment you start to rub it onto your face. It gets noticeably hot but never uncomfortably so and pretty much cools back down instantly. I'd say this reaches its hottest temperature and then cools back down to skin temperature in around fifteen seconds.
It's easily spread across the skin and my experience has found that a thin layer really is all you need to get maximum results from the mask. Two 5p coin dollop sizes are enough to cover my entire face and neck sufficiently.
Rinsing the mask off is also easily done with warm water and I've experienced no difficulties in removing the mask after the recommended five minutes. A few splashes of water on my face and it's all gone, just like rinsing face wash off really.
The results of this Five Minute Thermal Detox Mask are absolutely amazing. It apparently works by the heat of the mask opening up the pores 'so the charcoal and kaolin clay can help draw out the impurities from deep within the skin'. I certainly feel that it does do this. I was rather surprised to discover that this mask is actually aimed at oily and greasy skin types after using it a couple of times. I have the complete opposite really, very dry, often quite tight and extremely sensitive skin yet this still does absolute wonders for my face without causing any negative reactions.
My skin feels so soft after using this I often don't even bother with a face moisturiser afterwards (which is very rare for me as I normally apply it religiously), I just don't feel the need for it. This softness lasts for a good forty-eight hours too!
It really brightens up my skin and vanishes blemishes completely. My brighter skin also has a much more even complexion since using this.
I wouldn't say it helps clear up spots but it definitely reduces the number of spots breaking out. I've been using this twice a week for about a month now and I don't think my skin has ever looked as clear as it currently does. I've barely even touched my concealer and foundation since using this regularly as I just don't really have anything that needs covering now!
I've used many face masks in the past and I've tried some absolutely amazing ones, none compare to this one from Sanctuary though. It's really genuinely impressed me with how good it has made my skin look and feel and I can't recommend it enough. It's had no negative impacts on my sensitive skin and it seems to give it a good amount of moisture too. £8.50 for 100ml may not be the cheapest mask out there but I believe it's thoroughly worth it particularly seems as such a small amount it needed making a tube last a long time even with twice weekly use. Add it to your Christmas list, save up your Boots Advantage Card points or just go out and buy it, I can't see why you'd regret it!
Whilst wandering around a high street pharmacy looking for something to brighten up my skin, I decided to try this face mask as I love The Sanctuary shower gel and shower scrub and thought it might leave me feeling refreshed.
--- My Skin type ---
I am in my twenties and have combination/normal skin. I can get a few spots but overall my skin is in good condition. I usually just feel like I have clogged pores and that my face is "dirty" even though I have just washed it.
--- Application ---
This face mask is quite thick and "clay" like and so it isn't the easiest to put on. However, it does ensure that you put a thick layer on. Then, as you rub the mask onto your skin it heats up due to the thermal properties and feels like hot clay. Whilst this may not be everyone's cup of tea, I LOVE it as it feels like a treat. Once the mask is on, you leave it for 5-10 minutes to work it's magic! Unlike some masks, this doesn't feel tight or uncomfortable. Whilst you can feel it working it is pleasant. After 5-10 minutes, you then just wash the face mask off and feel the difference. It comes off quite easily and you do feel like it has cleaned your face.
--- Results ----
I was thoroughly impressed with this face mask and now use it a couple of times a week as a small treat to myself. It leaves your pores feeling clean and open and your skin feeling smooth and refreshed. I also notice that my skin looks a lot better and more radiant. In summary, it will leave your face feeling amazing!
--- Price ----
At approx £10 a tube this product is definitely worth the price. Whilst it is more expensive than a lot of your single use masks, I think you would probably get at least 20 uses out of one tube and the results are amazing!
--- Recommendation ---
I would definitely recommend this face mask to anyone who likes a small pamper session at home. If you take 10 minutes out of your day to apply it properly, relax, then wipe it off with a nice soft flannel you will feel like you have had a facial!
