I received a Maca Root gift set from my aunt for Christmas and as part of the gift set it included a face wash. The Body Shop do a whole series of MAca Root products which have been specially designed for men's skin. The range includes face washes, shaving creams and moisturisers and is quite reasonably priced especially when compared to some products which have been designed especially for men.
Normally face washes are on the cheaper end of the scale in product ranges but this one is a little pricier than I expected at £8. Since the moisturiser is only £10 I expected this to be about half the price especially since the moisturiser lasts a lot longer than the face wash does.
It is a good face wash though and cleans the skin without stripping all the natural oils from it. Like the rest of the Maca Root range this smells great, so good in fact that I am going to buy myself the Maca Root deodorant as the smell is so nice. A little bit of the face wash is enough to get a really good lather and when I put it on my face it really feels as though it is actually cleaning my skin.
When I wash it off my skin looks clearer and really feels like it has been cleaned deep down. This is usually evident when I rinse my face in the basin as I can see the dirt that has come off with the wash in the water. It is disgusting to think that my face can get that dirty in such a short space of time.
I really liked the fact that this cleaned deep down as I tend to get spots if I am not using a good face wash that deep cleans. This kept my skin looking clear and removed excess grease and shine and I didn't experience any breakouts and in fact the odd spot that I did get wasn't as red or angry as I usually get. It also didn't irritate my skin or leave it red. Nor did it leave my skin feeling dry and tight after using it. My skin was left quite comfortable. I always followed up with the moisturiser because if I don't moisturise then my skin tends to misbehave and start overproducing oil but if you have normal skin then you might get away with just washing and not using a moisturiser as it isn't drying in the least.
The only thing about this that didn't like was that it took absolutely ages to rinse it all off my skin. When rinsing it off it didn't just take a couple of splashes of water but I had to keep splashing it for ages otherwise the foam was still on my skin and I could feel it sitting there. This wasn't an issue when using it in the shower but when I was washing my face in the sink I quite often had to fill the sink up a couple of times to clean it all off my skin.
Overall though this is an excellent face wash and really good for men's skin as it cleans it without drying it and stops it from becoming shiny and greasy. The Peruvian Maca Root used in this range must do something as since using it my skin has been looking really good and a lot clearer so I will certainly be sticking with it for the time being.
This face wash is part of Body Shop's 'For Men' range and as such comes in a rather aggressive looking black tube with lots of concentric rings on it with the text in white and orange. There's nothing girly about this product at all.
I'd never heard of Maca Root before but apparently it comes from Peru where it is eaten by both the people and their livestock and is supposed to be an aphrodisiac. That's what they use if for in South America but the Body Shop have put theirs into a face wash.
When you squeeze it out of the tube it smells strongly of vanilla with hints of lilac and vanilla. It's quite a pleasant smell and doesn't linger on the face or hands when you've finished. I thought that Maca root would make this a gritty or chunky scrub but it isn't, it's smooth. The consistency is of a thick, good quality washing up liquid. Rubbing it onto my wet face I found that it lathered up nicely but not too much and it washed off easily to leave my skin feeling clean and fresh but, crucially, not greasy at all.
It's not cheap (£8 for a 125 ml tube) but you don't need much. A little goes a long way so it lasts a few months. It's a quality product but not one that I'd feel the need to use wice a day unless I had a particularly dirty lifestyle.
Finally, as with all Body Shop products, the packaging tells us that it's not tested on animals. That can only be a good thing.
I have been using this product for a couple of years now and its excellent. Its one of The Body Shop "Maca Root" (Peruvian) range for men. Its pricey at £10 for 125ml, but there has always been and still is a 3 for 2 deal on it and the other "Maca Root" products. This makes it £6.66 if your prepared to buy 3, and considering the improvements i have noticed is a price worth paying. Deffinately worth checking out the balancing face protector and moisturiser of this Body Shop range as well!
The product comes in a black tube as you can see above and the product itself is clear with a slight orange tinge to it. It smell isn't too pungent, its a very fresh and natural fragrange, and i have grown to like it. I use this twice a day and have been nothing but impressed. Its also a soap-free facial wash so its good for sensitive skin like mine. Great for general cleansing, to leave skin feeling clean, soft and invigorated The product lathers up very well and its important to remember that a little goes a long way! It generally takes me 2-3 months to get through one of these using it twice a day.
Its excellent to use before shaving as it removes excess oil and cleans skin in preperation. Using this product before and the Maca Root balancing face protector which i have also reviewed afterwards, the pain factor of shaving has been completly eliminated for me!
Some face washes of this kind tend to fry out skin, especially if you use too much. However, i have found that this product does the complete opposite. If anything it makes your skin feel very hydrated and moisturised which is a massive bonus. Eliminates the hassle of sometimes having to apply lots of moisturiser as the facewash has dried your skin out. After around 2 weeks of using this product i had noticed a bit change in my overall complection, my skin looked hydrated, revitalised and the area where i shave was much less irritated! For £6.66 i would say thats a very good improvement.
Since i have started using the "Maca Root" range i have also noticed that breakouts have been vastly eliminated and to a lesser intensity when they do inevitably happen. I can only merit this to The Body Shop's great new range.
In my opinion The Body Shop's "Maca Root" range for men is excellent! If you have never used skin care products before like quite a lot of men, give these a go, you will not be dissapointed!
