Advantages: Nice packaging, Rich colours.
Disadvantages: Hard to get used to the brush, Clumped my lashes up, Takes a while to dry 100%
I'm a sucker for Mascaras. Wether they're on offer, part of a great advertising campaign or are just a new release from my favourite companies, I will usually buy it. I like thickening formulas with rich, dark pigments be them black or brown. I like innovative brushes and simple, attractive packaging so it was a given that I would purchase Bourjois' "Volume Clubbing" pretty much as soon as it went on sale.
'To perfect your look and give extreme volume to lashes, dress them with this new mascara' - "Volume Clubbing" promises to be the clubbing girls dream!
It's marketed as an 'ultra volumising mascara' that lasts all night long. It also claims to be ultra resistent and 100% tear and sweat proof. It uses a double sided brush and a product 'resevoir' to ensure your lashes are fully coated, thick and ready to party :-)
The packaging is a simple thick tube with bright metallic graphics on it. The colour of the packaging contrasts with the colour of the product inside. Currently there are four shades: Ultra Black, Black, Blue and Brown.
The double sided brush is flat and bristle free on one side, whereas the other side of the wand has large, thick bristles.
This product retails for around £7.50 depending on where you purchase it from so it's not the cheapest drugstore mascara around, but definately a lot cheaper than many high end brands which usually retail for around £16.00 and upwards.
The first time I used this I was a little confused by the wand. The flat, no bristled side is meant to add volume, whilst the bristles are there to comb though and add length but to be honest I found the bald side just clogged up my lashes! The formula is very thick and heavy so it clumped quite badly right away and needed a lot of combing to even it out.
Once I got the hang of it however it was a little easier to use, though I still wasn't all that impressed.
I find it clumps, gives a 'chunky' stuck together appearance to lashes and the brush is too large to comb through my lower lashes effectively. It feels quite heavy once on my lashes, though I will admit the pigment is very rich so it's not lying when it says "Ultra Black".
It stayed on pretty well throughout the day, but I found it slightly harder than usual to remove at the end of the day. An oil based cleanser removes it perfectly though, so it's not a huge deal. It did take a short while to fully dry on my lashes too so I had to be careful not to blink very much for a while!
Overall I wasn't impressed. Although the packaging is nice enough this just isn't for me. I'm in the minority here as I know lots of people who love it but for me it just takes too much hassle to get right. I don't like spending too long combing through my lashes after applying mascara or removing it later on so I won't be repurchasing and I wouldn't really recommend it either.
Summary: Definately thickens, but not in a good way.

- 11/02/09 Thanks for this, I had been wanting to buy it because I only use volume mascaras (my lashes are stupidly long but sparse), now I know to avoid! |
