Advantages: Fresh bread every day
Disadvantages: More effort than just buying a loaf
Bread makers who needs them?
A loaf of bread costs nothing from somewhere like Asda or Tesco. So why spend nearly £150 on one of these?
Because there is no comparison between the tasteless bleached bread available for penny's and the soft, warm heavenly scented magic that comes out of one of these machines.
The smell alone of the freshly baked loaves that I have made, make this worth it's weight in gold. When people hear that I have a bread maker they always say " could you be bothered, they're so cheap to buy".
Well yes, making the bread is quick and simple, I thought there would be some preparation needed but no.
All I have to to is simply apply all of my dry ingredients into the non stick pan along with the measured out wet ingredients, such as milk, butter or olive oil depending on the type of bread I'm making. Select the setting I want and off it goes it's as simple as that. It makes little too no noise at all especially once the mixing process has finished. There is a handy measuring spoon provided with the maker plus there is a measuring jug for the wet ingredients, so everything you need is in the box. Including a recipe book, that I have used many times to varying levels of success. Not that the bread turned out wrong, just that my family prefer some over others, but it's fun to experiment.
If like me, you will watch the baking process for the first time through the top mounted baking window. You'll be amazed that the ingredients dispenser opens at the perfect time (depending on your settings) and adds the ingredients to the mix at optimum time. This is great if i'm baking a sweet raisin and maple syrup loaf for example. After the large paddle has gently mixed the original ingredients, getting every bit from the bottom of the pan, it then kneads it in to a delectable looking dough and then at the right time the separate ingredients hatch dispenses the special flavour making ingredients into the mix. This dispenser has a maximum capacity of 125g, this is more than enough I find as the loves can be made in three different sizes of 500g, 750g and a monstrous 1kg, so 125g of extra seeds, nuts or fruit is plenty.
There are lots of different setting 15 in total but I use the quick bake function mostly. This takes 58 minutes in total from start to finish.
When it comes to cleaning both the pan and the paddle are made of non stick materials, and I have never had any problems with dried on ingredients being stuck to either of these wince the baking process had ended. In order to give the machine a thorough clean just remove the paddle and the internal pan and wash both in warm soapy water, as there will be little to no residue from the bread, this takes me little too no time at all. The out side is just as simple to clean, just use a damp cloth with some warm water or if necessary very light amount of washing up liquid diluted heavily and wipe over the surface and the give it a bother wipe with a dry cloth.
The overall look of this bread maker is quite good. It's large stainless steel construction and black lid and window make it look modern and stylish.
The main controls are located on the top right hand side of the lid. There is a small LCD display to tell you the settings and how much time there is left when baking. All the buttons are directly under this screen.
You can make lots of different types of bread with this machine and even cakes.
There is an interior light just like in a standard oven. This is great as with the press of a button you can see your bread and it's progress, such as how brown it is. The light stays on for around one minute.
The results will depend on the ingredients used and the fact of weather or not you pay close attention to the instructions. If you don't, it can take some time to get used to, but if you take a moment to read the manual, you will be making perfect bread in no time.
