The Unold 8641 Electric Breadmaker
- Price and Availability -
The Unold 8641 breadmaker is an older model now and therefore not available new at any online retailers that I can see. I purchased this breadmaker over 6 years ago from Amazon, and it's actually a German brand, however it did come with a UK plug and instructions. I paid £49.99 for it - a great price for a breadmaker 6 years ago. You may be able to get it on eBay from time to time or possibly from independent electrical retailers.
- What's In The Box -
The Unold 8641 comes with the main unit, power cord with fused UK plug, instructional manual, recipe book, VHS tape on how to use it and a few easy recipies (told you it was old!) and the kneading paddle.
- Looks -
It's quite a compact breadmaker, no larger than my four slice toaster, and has a white plastic finish. It's a cool touch model, so it won't get hot and burn your fingers, and it has an LCD (like a calculator screen) panel on the front showing the program you are using, time left and so on. It has six buttons (three each side of the screen) and a power indicator light right next to the screen (which goes green). Overall even so many years on I still think it is a good looking breadmaker - compact, slimline, smooth and quite modern.
- Use -
It's so easy to use - you can make pizza dough, white, brown and wholemeal loaves, speciality breads and bagel dough, and most importantly, it has a timer! Even more modern expensive UK brands don't stack up when it comes to my beloved timer - you can set it to *finish* at a certain time - brilliant! So when I am coming home from work, or busy with my daughter, I can program it to ensure I return home to the smell of freshly baked bread and a tasty loaf to enjoy.
The fast loaf setting takes an impressive 1 hr 40 plus 20 minutes cooling time so you can easily make a loaf every other day if you need to. For my husband and I, I use it maybe once or twice a week as we don't eat bread every day, but it is lovely to make a fresh loaf when we have guests - nothing beats fresh sandwiches!
The unit is easily cleaned by wiping down with a damp cloth and the kneading paddle goes right into the dishwasher. You can get a slight 'nick' in your bread from the paddle (as the bread cooks right in the pan with the paddle) but it's not a deep gouge, the paddle isn't stuck and it doesn't bother us at all.
The buttons are very easy to press, the screen is clear (though not backlit) and overall, I've had years and years of use out of my £49.99 breadmaker and despite using some other models I always end up going back to it.
- Recommend -
A £49.99 breadmaker which still looks good, works well, and gives a tasty loaf six years on? Yes I do! You are more likely to inherit this one from the back of someone's cupboard than find it new, but let me tell you - it is worth using. I really love the Unold 8641 - obscure as it is - and am glad I took a chance on it. I'll award it four stars out of five - I wish the LED screen was backlit and I wish there was a cake option but other than that ti's great.
Summary: Overall a great breadmaker
