Advantages: Tasty!! Filling!!

Disadvantages: Price!

I have always loved Alpen, ever since I was a child. Yet over the years I have kind of 'forgot' to buy it and so when I fancied some the other week, I went to grab a box in the supermarket, and then when I saw that the price of an average sized box was just under £5 I immediately put it back!! I think that Alpen has gone far too expensive. However, I did manage to recently find a small 375g box of Alpen for just £1.89, and so I was pleased that I could actually afford it.

For those of you who don't know, Alpen is a muesli type of cereal made by Weetabix; it has been around since the 1960's and so is well established.

The cereal consists of wholegrain wheat, wholegrain rolled oats, roasted nuts and dried fruit. To look at, I guess it is quite similar to porridge oats, however there is a lot more to it that just that. It is definitely 'busy' looking, bursting with all it's different roasted nuts and dried fruit.

I always have mine with milk and I think that the milk compliments the Alpen really well as it seems to help it to 'release' all the fabulous flavouring. The Alpen, whilst it may look boring to eat, it is very tasty; quite sweet with a lovely crunchy texture. It is incredibly moreish.I love the juicy raisons; I don't know what it is, but when I am chewing, I love it when I find a nice juicy raison.

I find that a bowl (45g) of Alpen is very filling as it is quite a 'heavy' cereal (you can see this from the weight of the box too!). I always find that if I have Alpen for breakfast, I am too full to eat anything else, whereas if I have another cereal (I.e Frosties), I have to eat loads of other things so that I am full.

Each 45g serving will set you back 170g calories which I don't think is too bad, especially as it fills you up. You will also find 5.0g of protein, and 30.1g of carbohydrates (of which is 10.4g sugar). There is 2.6g of fat - 0.4g of which is saturated and 3.2g of fibre. As to salt, there is 0.05g of sodium per bowl, of which is equivalent to 0.12g of salt.

I love this cereal and would definitely recommend it.
