“ Brand: Country Barn / Type: Flakes „
Cereal is a big part of breakfast in our house and as a result I am always on the lookout for cheaper brands and being able to save a few pennies. As a result I managed to find this new discount brand in Tesco and after the success of all the other discount branded products I have tried I did not hesitate to pick a box of these up. ~~THE PACKAGING~~ The cornflakes come in an orange box which has a picture of a white bowl full of the flakes on the front and back and the product name in red and brown lettering. On the top corners of the box you can find the Country Barn and the Discount Brands logos. On the sides of the box you will be able to find all the product information including the ingredients, nutritional values and contact details for Country Barn. The flakes are inside the box in a white plastic bag which means that the top of the bag can be folded over in between use to keep the flakes fresh. ~~TASTE~~ I was looking forward to trying these cornflakes as I had not eaten them for some time and I am happy to say I was very pleased with these ones. Upon opening the box and the inside packet I instantly noticed the wheat smell which came out. I did find it quite pleasant and not too strong. The flakes are all a good size and golden in colour. They are very crunchy before the milk is added and taste good. They are not too sweet and they do remind me just of the Kellogg's branded ones. When I added the milk to them they managed to stay quite firm and crunchy for the whole life of the dish full. For me though as I do like them to go soggy I left them in the milk for a good 10 minutes the second time I ate them and they I got the desired soggy ones! Sugar can be added to the top of the flakes if you wish to make them sweet but personally I don't think that they need any sugar added to them. One thing which my boys do enjoy having is diced apple on theirs which also makes for a much healthier breakfast. ~~INFO~~ The flakes come in a box size of 500g which is a good size and lasts in my house for around 2 weeks as we do not have them everyday. They are to be stored in a cool dry place and the top of the inner bag must be folded over after use to keep them fresh. The ingredients for the flakes for those wishing to know are:- Maize (91%), Sugar, Salt, Barley malt Extract, Emulsifier (mono- and di-glycerides of Fatty Acids), Niacin, Vitamin E, Iron, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B1, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12. The nutritional values for a 30g serving with semi-skimmed milk are:- Energy - 740kCal Protein - 6.9g Carbohydrate - 31.0g Of which sugars - 8.7g Fat - 2.5g Of which saturates - 1.6g Fibre - 1.0g Sodium - 0.3g Salt Equivalent - 0.8g The flakes do contain Gluten but they are suitable for vegetarians. The recipe does not contain nuts but Country Barn cannot guarantee that these have been made in a factory which previously used nuts. The box is made from cardboard so it can be 100% recycled. Usually this means model making in my house! ~~PRICE AND AVAILABILITY~~ Country Barn flakes can be bought for the bargain price of 69p which is well over £1 cheaper than the leading brands. I have only noticed them in Tesco's but recently I have seen Asda starting to stock more of the discount brands so they may soon be available in their too. ~~OVERALL~~ After the success of these flakes then they get a good recommendation from me. They taste just as good as the leading brands, my family did not even notice I had switched brands until I mentioned it to them. They are a great cheap price and you can make so many different varieties of breakfasts by adding different toppings to them.
