Advantages: Surprisingly tasty, filling, healthy

Disadvantages: Not really suitable for eating dry

I try to vary my breakfast each day as I was advised by my Weight Watchers leader some time ago that eating the same thing day in day out can have a negative effect on weight loss, I have not ascertained how accurate this advice is but have discovered that my diet does actually go better through the day if I've had something interesting in the morning.

Now, many of you will say that the words 'interesting' and 'All Bran' should not be used in the same sentence but I urge you to give it a try as it's a much nicer breakfast than you are imagining.

Kellogg's All Bran is basically small thin sticks of wheat bran that has been sweetened slightly to make it more palatable. It soaks up the milk nicely and I find it goes soft rather than soggy after adding the milk. The taste is very hard to describe; it's wheaty and rather bland with that natural flavour that automatically leads you to believe that it's a nutritious and healthy product.

I think it has a lovely flavour, although if you are used to eating Cocoa Pops or other highly sweetened cereals then you may find that this is a little dull for you. I would say to persevere with it if you're in this camp as I find All Bran is somewhat of an acquired taste and you will get used to it. Try adding some chopped strawberries or halved blueberries to your cereal bowl for a little added sweetness and to give yourself some variety with the textures and flavours. My daughter eats it with natural yogurt and a spoon of syrup or honey, she says this brings out the wheatiness but also disguises it slightly which makes this cereal much more interesting for her.

By its very nature this is an incredibly dry cereal and certainly not one that I would eat without milk, it has a dusty and bitty appearance and texture when dry which gets worse the further down the box you go. I always waste a handful of All Bran from each box as by the time I have gotten down to the last bowl in the box the bottom layer is far too dusty and broken up for me to eat. Well, it's not wasted as I pour it into my garden bird feeder and they seem to love it!

The health benefits of eating a cereal like All Bran is worth considering, it's so important to eat fibre rich foods such as this as it will help keep your digestive system in tip top condition and will also help you to stay 'regular' in the toilet department. It's important to increase your fluid intake if you are planning to add more fibre to your diet as if you don't it can have an opposite effect and cause constipation. From Kellogg's website I can tell you that a single bowl of All Bran will provide you with the same amount of fibre as 32 wholemeal crackers, which I'm sure you will agree is a large leap in helping to get more fibre into your body.

A 170g bowl of All Bran with 125ml semi skimmed milk contains 170 calories and 3g of fat, plus 11g of fibre. This size serving is perfect as it keeps me satisfied until lunchtime and because fibre released energy slowly I don't feel as though I need a snack mid morning, which is usually the case when I eat a more sugary breakfast. I bought a 750g box from Sainsbury's and this cost in the region of £2.40, which is roughly the same price as other branded cereals but seems more of a bargain as All Bran seems to last so long!

Summary: A cereal that I am always suprised at how much I like it whenever I have a bowl!
