I tried these out when I got a free coupon for all the new Kellogg's crunchy nut brands. I opted for the nutty version as these were the only new cereals which were gluten free. Having always been a fan of the ordinary Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, I hoped Kellogg's wouldn't have messed around too much with a tried and tested classic, and I wasn't disappointed! The flakes are just the same, but in amongst them are generous helpings of tasty almonds and pecans. And to top it all off, there are quite a few little peanut clusters, coated in caramel. These are delightfully sweet and crunchy, and add the element of surprise to the cereal- after a few bites, you suddenly crunch on a cluster! So, all in all, I would say the updates to the original cereal are very welcome- the extra nuts add variety and ensure that no mouthful is a chore! On the downside, having been drawn in to this nutty sensation with my free box, I eagerly sought them out on my next Tesco shop, only to find that they cost £2.55 for a meagre 375g! Be aware that the boxes are quite a bit smaller than your average pack of cereals. Even a 500g box of the ordinary Crunchy Nuts was still cheaper. So I won't be making these a part of my regular breakfast, but will have to limit myself to the odd box on special occasions!
I thought Crunchy Nut Nutty would be Crunchy Nut Cornflakes but with more nuts but they are much more interesting than that. The flakes are actually Crunchy Nut Cornflakes but it is what has been added that makes them so special and tasty. The flakes are lovely and I think if they weren't so good then the cereal would be spoiled but they are perfect. They are crunchy and make a good crunch noise when I am chewing them, they have tiny little pieces of nuts attached to them and then are lightly coated in honey. This makes the cereal lovely and sweet and I can taste the natural sweetness of the honey as well. When I pour my milk onto the cereal I noticed that these flakes do not go soggy like most cereal and even the flakes that had been in the bottom of the bowl were still nice and crisp when I got to them with my spoon. Mixed in with the flakes there are sliced almonds, pecan pieces and clusters of peanuts that have been coated in something that makes them lovely and crispy. I think these peanut clusters are a lovely addition to the Crunchy Nut Nutty cereal because they have a completely different texture and taste to everything else in my bowl. They are small bumpy little balls of chopped up peanuts and the taste of peanut blends nicely with the sweet caramel flavour of the stiff yogurt-like coating. The almonds and pecan pieces are too small to be able to really taste them on their own but they add to the general nuttiness of the cereal. There are not many of these nuts in each average bowl but I have found that the closer I get to the bottom of the box the more nuts I get so it is worth giving the box a good shake before pouring out your cereal to get the maximum benefit of the nuts. Together everything goes very well. The flakes are nice and crunchy and a bit nutty thanks to the bits of peanut stuck to each flake. The crunchiness is toned down a little bit with the addition of the peanut clusters, almonds and pecans. It tastes very nutty and this is what I would have expected and it is a nice blend of nut flavours from the subtle almonds to the more robust flavour of the pecans. I think Crunchy Nut Nutty is a very sweet cereal because as well as the honey Kelloggs have also used brown sugar to sweeten the cereal. This means you should not need to add any extra sugar. I always have mine with semi skimmed milk and I make sure the milk is as cold as possible because this brings out the flavours of the nuts and flakes. An average bowl of Crunchy Nut Nutty with skimmed milk is about 200 calories which is not bad but higher than plainer cereals such as Shreddies or Weetabix. I usually have my Crunchy Nut Nutty for supper instead of breakfast because I think it is too heavy for an early meal but is nice and filling an hour before I go to bed.
Golden nutty flakes of corn covered with honey and nuts, loaded with a mix of almonds, pecans plus the new crunch of caramel flavour peanut clusters.
