Advantages: delicious, healthy, keeps me going till lunch
Disadvantages: none
Having run out of cereal, which I always have for breakfast during the week, I was on the lookout for something different. In the winter months I tend to stick to porridge but once the weather warms up I prefer something different, but healthy too. I like to try new varieties all the time and can't say that I am loyal to any one particular brand. Browsing the cereal aisle I spotted the new 'Superfruity' range of Shredded Wheat cereal. I can't say I am a huge fan of the original Shredded Wheat as I find it a bit bland, but I do tend to like cereal with fruit in it and given that I had a voucher giving me 50p off the retail price (ordinarily £2.79) I popped this in my basket. There are two variations in the 'Superfruity' range; Blackberry, Blackcurrant and Blueberry and Raspberry, Strawberry and Cranberry. Both of these sounded nice but in the end I opted for the latter.
The Superfruity Shredded Wheat range is manufactured by Nestle and has their 'whole grain guarantee'. It is recommended by the American Dietary Guidelines that we eat at least 3 servings of whole grain (which amounts to about 48g) each day. A bowl of Superfruity Shredded Wheat provides 2 of your 3 daily servings. Now although I don't live in the USA I am sure similar recommendations apply in the UK and even if it isn't incorporating whole grain into your diet is no bad thing!
The cereal comes in a red box, containing 525g of cereal, which amounts to around 11 servings per pack. On the front there is a picture of a red heart shaped cereal bowl with the fruit filled shredded wheat tumbling into it. To the left of the bowl is the letter 'I' and then the name of the cereal emblazoned below so that the whole thing reads "I heart Superfruity Shredded Wheat. The front also states that the cereal contains added antioxidant, which is in the form of selenium which helps to protect the body's cells from oxidative damage. Now I must be a marketing persons dream consumer because whenever I hear the word antioxidant my ears prick and the product usually ends up in my basket!
The cereal itself consists of bite sized parcels of wheat that have been filled with fruit filling. I have this cereal with cold milk. Depending on how I feel I will either then have these straightway so that the cereal is crispy or let the parcels soak for a couple of minutes so that they go soft. They taste good either way! When biting into the parcel I am hit by a quite sharp and tangy taste, which I think is predominantly of cranberries. There is also a hint of sweetness there but not too much. It certainly brings wake the taste buds up first thing in the morning! I find this quite delicious and moreish.
Each serving with semi-skimmed milk contains 217 (8% of you daily allowance) calories so this is fairly healthy. It also has the added advantage that it keeps me going until lunch, without the hunger pangs hitting me mid-morning. Overall this is a tangy, delicious cereal and one that I highly recommend. I'll be trying the blackberry, blackcurrant and blueberry one next.
Summary: Yum!
