I never used to be a breakfast eater but over the last year or so I have been won round to the opinion that it is the most important meal of the day and I love to vary what I eat for breakfast and buy different cereals. Now that the weather is getting colder and winter is approaching I'm glad to have some hot food for breakfast but whatever I have has to be quite quick as I don't really feel like messing around for ages doing proper cooking in the mornings.
Oat So Simple from Quaker Oats is something that I have bought quite a few times but as I am currently eating the golden syrup variety I thought I would review it. This flavour appealed to me because whenever I make porridge out of plain porridge oats I like to drizzle a bit of golden syrup on, but since I don't really use golden syrup for anything else unless I am baking (which is not too often) it seems a bit pointless to buy a tin of syrup just for that. Therefore this flavour is really handy as it has the porridge and syrup flavour in one. I thought it might taste too synthetic and even sweeter than real syrup, but actually it tastes quite genuine and is pretty much the same as real porridge with a bit of syrup stirred into it.
The Oat So Simple is really easy to make so I think the name is justified! They come in individual sachets so you can just grab one and tip it into a bowl without trying to work out how much you need. As oats look like a different quantity dry compared to when they are heated with milk, I do think it's an advantage to have these simple servings as it is too easy to make a ridiculous amount if you just pour out some oats! The sachet also has a line marked on it to show how much milk you should add. This is a great idea as vague instructions like 200 ml (or whatever) can lead to having to root around for a measuring jug or trying to do it by eye which for me is usually wildly inaccurate! The sachet is strong enough to hold the milk, and it doesn't become soggy and disintegrate, which I thought it might as it is just a paper sachet. It seems to be lined with something resistant to liquid. The only complaint I have with this sachet measuring system is that they tell you to put too much milk in. I find that if I put milk up to the line, the porridge comes out so watery and thin! Maybe this is just personal preference but I can hardly believe it is supposed to be so watery. Through trial and error I have found the amount of milk that works well for me (about 4/5 of the sachet roughly) and this creates a lovely porridge which is a bit thicker. The quantity is okay but if I am feeling really hungry I have even been known to put 2 sachets in a big bowl and then just double the amount of milk. The number of sachets seems to vary as you can get big or small packs. My current pack has 9 in it.
You simply microwave it for 2 minutes and stir, and it comes out perfect and ready to eat. Obviously you might need to leave it to cool for a bit but I haven't burnt my tongue on it or anything.
You can stir anything else you want into the porridge such as raisins, fruit, jam, honey, more syrup, nuts or whatever. I am eating some now as I write this and I have put extra honey in which is a bit of sweet overload but tastes nice still and gives a great energy boost as I got up really early this morning and was standing in the cold at Westfield waiting for a wristband to see Taylor Swift turn on the Christmas lights tonight so I need to refuel with energy and heat before college now!
This breakfast really keeps me full and I find it more substantial than a cold cereal.
I recommend it! If you think the syrup one sounds too sweet then just get the plain one, but I do like the syrup.
Oatso Simple ~ Golden Syrup
My hubby and I spend half of our life out in Spain and half here in the Uk and the Spanish health system requires that you go and have a complete health check up every 6 months. All this entails is a quick blood test from which they can detect pretty much anything and rectify any underlying problems very quickly as they are spotted almost immediately. Two weeks after the blood has been taken you return to the doctors (Salud) for your results.
Anyway just over a year ago both my husband and myself were given our results as normal and were amazed to find that we both had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. My husband, his results being higher than mine, was treated with tablets that he now has to take for the rest of his life but my results, being quite a bit lower and just over the border line could be rectified with exercise and diet.
Of course as soon as we got home we were straight on the net to find the correct foods to have to help combat high cholesterol and it gives you various ideas such as oily fish, plenty of fruits and veg, certain fats such as those found in Flora Pro-Active etc, etc. Also one thing that struck me as being a bit strange and not something that I was aware of and that was Porridge or oats in general, are extremely good for high cholesterol and I don't think that it is something that too many people would be aware of. So consequently this was the start of my healthy eating regime and Oatso Simple is now a regular part of that diet.
I find the easiest way to have my porridge in the mornings is by having the little sachet version as I get just the right amount for me and its so convenient to just pour out of the pack in the correct amount already. It is obviously cheaper to buy in the large box but the sachets are just so convenient. I like the Golden Syrup version as it gives just the right amount of sweetness and by adding just 180ml of semi skimmed milk it give a calorific value of only 216cals which is not at all bad for a breakfast.
To prepare it all you need to do is pop it into the microwave for just 2 minutes and stir when you take it out and ..... job done ! Or if you prefer it can be heated through on the hob, but I myself prefer the speed and ease of the microwave.
It is tasty and creamy with just the right amount of sweetness and is warm and very filling. If however I am particularly hungry on a morning I will just add some extra fruit to top it up making it even more nutritious as I am also adding to my 5 a day. I particularly like sliced banana for this and it fills you up so well that you really don't feel at all hungry again until lunch time.
Nutrition:- Each 36g sachet when served with 180ml of semi-skimmed milk will give you,

* Saturated Fat = 2.3g
* Sugar = 16.4g
* Salt = 0.2g
This food is a highly nutritious source of protein, carbohydrates and vitamin B, and you can also buy this in organic and gluten free options too.
It retails at almost all supermarkets for around £1.99 for a box of 10 sachets but at most places if you shop around you can generally find them on offer for £3.00 if you buy 2 boxes, which I usually do.
I would recommend this breakfast meal, not just for its health benefits, but also as a tasty, warming and filling breakfast especially on these cold and wintry days, its lovely to have something warm and filling inside you, to see you through till lunch time.

Coming from a Scottish background it probably seems like heresy that I should buy anything like Ready Brek or Oatso Simple and normally I don't but when I popped round to my local Tesco Express to buy my normal porridge oats they had sold out. I was a bit annoyed because not only do I have porridge to make sure I keep my collestral stays nice and low, I also like it because when I am trying to lose weight a bowl of this in the morning stops my 11 o'clock craving for cake or biscuits because oats are a low GI food which are low(ish) in fat. So because my main shopping delivery isn't until the end of next week, when I saw the 10 36g sachet packs of Quakers golden syrup Oatso Simple were on offer buy 2 for £3 I thought "oh they'll do". After all it was made by the same company that I get my normal oats from usually so it must be ok.
Now I was quite interested to see how these sachets turned out. I have never liked Ready Brek because to me it was like baby food and looked (and smelled like sawdust) and getting the right quantities of powder to milk was often hard - one morning it would be fine - the next it would be rock hard! So to get a pack, with a flavouring and all you had to so was add milk and heat in the microwave for 2 minutes I couldn't see any downsides. It certainly beat getting the measuring cups out and standing over a hot stove stirring away or even cooking it in the microwave but having to watch it constantly to make sure it didn't bubble over and stirring it occasionally.
How wrong I was! The first thing that annoyed me with the pack was that the easy tear pack was far from easy. In the end I had to resort to scissors. Although there were some whole oats in the packet, the majority was fine powder reminiscent of Ready Brek. But instead of smelling like saw dust it had quite an overpowering sickly sweet smell that is a little like golden syrup but didn't seem as natural. Not an unpleasant smell but not as appetising as I had perhaps hoped for. Not one to be easily put off though I carried on and next came the milk juggling.
One of the things I thought would be good about this product was that I didn't need to do any milk measuring. You can pour the milk directly into the pack (once you have emptied the contents) and there is a line marked where you fill the milk up to. How easy is that? Well not quite as easy as you would think for some one with small hands. You see to get a good grip on it (to prevent it falling and splashing everywhere) meant that I was getting less milk in there than I needed. So I ended up resting it on the worktop to complete filling to the designated line. And having done that I tipped the milk into the oat mix, gave it a quick stir and into the microwave on full for 2 minutes (this is based on a category E 800W microwave). You can also heat 180ml of up in a saucepan, add the sachet and stir in until you get the right consistency.
According to the pack after two minutes you will take out your bowl and have the perfect porridge. So did I? Simple answer is no....I had milk with bits floating in it. It was also not hot enough. So in the microwave it went again for a further minute. It had an improved consistency but then the bowl was too hot to carry. OK maybe just a little thing but when you want to get on and eat your breakfast it would be nice if you actually get it out of the microwave! So after needing the oven glove to carry it to the table I was ready to sample the porridge. In the short(ish) space of time it had taken me to get from the kitchen to the dining room table a film had formed on the top of the porridge. It wasn't a crust as such but it was more solid than the oats underneath which had now turned into a lumpy wallpaper paste. Now I know normal porridge can seem to solidify and then have the hot oats underneath but that always seems quite natural. What had happened with this product seemed very strange to me and look very unappetising.
I persevered and took a spoonful to see if the taste could make up for it. Alas this was nothing like proper porridge with golden syrup - this was grainy Ready Brek with a sweet sickly taste. It was far too sweet for me and looking again at the packaging I noticed that there wasn't even any golden syup in there - it was just natural flavouring, sugar and salt and Lecithin derived from Soya (so no good if you are allergic to soya). The Lecithin is added to stop it boiling over in the microwave. At least when I have normal porridge it is just oats without any additives and if I want to have golden syrup it is the real thing. I really wasn't impressed.
However, I do like to give products a chance so the next morning I cooked the porridge on the hob. It took 4 minutes in total - not much less than it does for me to cook normal porridge but it wasn't scoldingly hot as the day before so I could eat it without the "skin" appearing. I also found when measuring the milk in the sachet the next time I used this method that if you do hold it so that you are pinching the sides in rather than putting it on the work top it cooked better in the microwave in the recommended 2 minutes - although it was still a bit too runny for my liking.
And although this is a more convenient method of making a hot cereal it isn't as healthy as real porridge. A 36g sachet of this product with 180ml of semi skimmed milk has 210 calories, 16.4g sugars, 5.3g of fat (2.2g of which are saturates) and 0.5g of salt but a 45g serving of my usual oats with 280ml of semi skimmed milk has 250 calories (but remember this is more oats and more milk), 12.3g of sugars, 4.2g of fat (1g of which are saturates) and 0.3g salt. If you just had 36g of normal oats you could reduce these figures by 20%. And the good fibre element that helps reduce your cholestral beta glucan is less than normal porridge. OK so if add in a spoonful golden syrup the sugar content goes up but you don't have to add that!
Overall I was very disappointed in this product. The only good thing was that I still didn't get that 11 o'clock cake feeling but whereas I might be able to go until 2pm for lunch I did feel hungrier about 12.30pm instead. For the convenience and if you have never had proper porridge I guess this is OK but for me it doesn't taste as good, it isn't as good for you and overall it is more expensive than ordinary porridge oats.
This is by far the best Porridge in the supermarket and certainly my favourite! I used to be a big fan of Ready Brek but Oatso Simple has a far smoother texture and nicer taste.
Oatso Simple can be bought in Tesco or Asda and is priced around £1.65 for a box of 12 sachets. Prices may vary if buying from a local shop as they seem to charge more.
The box is different from the one pictured above and is light blue in colour and pictures a cornfield with the old 'Quaker' man at the top of the box.
Oatso Simple can be bought in a variety of flavours from Original to Apple and Blueberry but the one I buy most often is Golden Syrup flavour.
The reason I buy this flavour most is because its very sweet and goes down easily in the morning. When buying the Original flavour, most people light to sweeten their porridge but with the Golden Syrup one there is no need to.
The box is made up of 12 x 27g sachets and each sachet provides 98 calories so this is great if you are trying to watch what you eat like myself. Porridge also releases energy slowly so it always keeps me full until lunchtime.
The sachets are so easy to prepare as you can empty the porridge into your bowl and then use the empty sachet packets to measure the exact amount of milk to add so you end up with a perfect bowl. I find this so convenient in the morning's when I'm rushing. Before these sachets were brought out I used to guess the measurements of milk and would end up with a bowl of rock hard oats! Once you have poured in the milk, you just microwave the mixture for 2 minutes and once finished the porridge is perfect and tastes lovely!

With the winter mornings drawing closer and closer, it is time to rethink my breafast regime. As I usually enjoy my piece of toast and peanut butter, I now feel like I should be having something a bit more filling and warming. Now one of my favourites is porridge and particluarly the Oat So Simple range as it is so quick and easy to do.
They do this porridge in a lot of different varieties, like Raspberry, Apple & Blueberry, Sultanas, Raisins, Cranberry & Apple, I like to buy the variety pack's that have 3 different flavours in so you can choose a different one each day, but I thought I would try these in the Golden Syrup flavour for a change.
This comes in a cardboard box (this is a lot different from the Dooyoo picture) which pictures a a blue sky and a field, with a large spoon of syrup on the front. The back is full of little bits of information about cholesterol, for example "By the time we are 35, 1 in 2 of us has raised cholesterol.Oats contain a soluble fibre caled Beta Glucan which helps soak up cholesterol" so helps us to maintain a healthy heart.
Inside the box you will find 10 paper sachets, with each one containing enough oats for one serving. Now what I love about this cereal is that once you have torn the top of the sachet and poured it into your bowl, you then get the milk from the fridge and pour it into the sachet you have just used where you will see a wriggly line near the top. Pour the milk to this line and hey presto you have exactly the amount you need to make the perfect breakfast.
Pop your bowl into the microwave and cook on high for 2-3 minutes (650W/800W), take out and enjoy your perfect bowl of porridge. Now I do like to make what I call proper porridge, but if I'm not awake properly and think about what I'm doing I end up with something that could well help in the bulding trade as it looks like cement!! So this is great when in a hurry as it never goes wrong!
Now I have tried many of the fruit ones which are particulary nice, but never this Syrup one so here goes. It is a really nice constistency, with it being very creamy, but I must say if you like sweet tasting things then you will love this as it is very sweet and the smell of golden syrup is very strong indeed! I'm afraid I'm not a particuarly sweet eater, especially for breakfast, so this is a bit too sweet for me.
Even though I wouldn't eat this particular one again, I would recommend it to anyone who does like a sweeter cereal. Each sachets contains;
so by the time you add your milk it is still a low calorie breakfast.
There are no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives in this cereal, so do your heart a favour and start eating your oats!!

Had always resisted my mum's urging to try this until recently as it seemed "cheating" as I had always used the original Quaker Oats. However, I decided to give it a try and was very pleasantly surprised and now it is regularly on my shopping list. It is very quick to prepare with no mess and no measuring. You empty the oats into your bowl, use the same sachet that contained the oats to measure out the milk then simply microwave for 2 1/2 minutes and its ready to eat. The taste is every bit as good as the original oats and the golden syrup flavour is delicious. Warm and filling on cold winter mornings.
If you don't have a lot of time for breakfast this is the ideal solution. Fast food but with no sacrificing of taste.
Have not yet tried the other flavours but can't wait to do so.
I tried this for the first time recently when I spent a few days with my Mum. She was raving about it because it is a way of eating porridge every day without the extra washing up.
The idea is very simple; you just take a sachet from the packet, empty the contents into a bowl, fill the sachet up with milk, add to the bowl and cook it in the micro-wave (or in a saucepan on the hob) for two minutes. It thickens slightly when it is cooked; I just add a little sugar and evaporated milk and it makes a delicious and filling breakfast. My Oats So Simple Golden Syrup variety came from a multi-flavour box which contained nine sachets altogether - three Original, three Golden Syrup and three Apple and Blueberry (which contains real pieces of fruit). They are all lovely.
Each sachet of the Golden Syrup variety, before the milk is added, provides 132 calories and contains 8.3g sugar. 2.2g fat, 0.4g saturates and 0.2g salt. The blurb on the packet tells you that oats contain beta glucan which helps to soak up cholesterol. It also says that the product contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.
Oats So Simple are made by Quaker Oats, a long-standing traditional manufacturer of porridge products, so you can be assured of top quality ingredients. They have been milling oats in Scotland since 1899 and all the electricity they use in their production is from renewable energy sources. Quakers has the Royal Warrant so even the Queen likes their products.
The list of ingredients is very short - the Golden Syrup contains 76% wholegrain rolled oats, sugar, natural flavouring, salt, stabiliser and soya Lecithin, which the packet says is added to minimise the product boiling over in the microwave. The packaging is simple cardboard so can be recycled.
At the moment, Somerfields is selling Oats So Simple for £2.15 per 9-sachet box on buy-one-get-one-free so they work out at just over 11p per sachet. When they revert to normal price, they will cost around 22p each - not bad for a filling and tasty start to the day.
ok so the thought of porridge up until now has never really excited me but I find that as I get older Im enjoying anything that doesnt take too much chewing ha ha (small incident of breaking a tooth on special K !)Full of cold and shopping in Tescos this afternoon my eye was caught by a half price sign in the cereal aisle....and hence where my relationship with QUAKER OAT SO SIMPLE was born ... At 89p (half price offer) for a box of 9 sachets its currently worth stocking upon for winter. The box is smaller than most cereal boxes which is great as I find half of my kitchen cupboards are full of opened cereal boxes that have been forgotten. The packaging is bright and eyecatching and there is a big red sign on the front saying '2 mins to perfect poridge .... ppssst... measure milk using sachet.The back of the box gives us the healthy advantages and statistics of the oats and beta glucan which it claims can reduce our cholesterol, a bit of history and even a picture of one of the farmers! I didnt wait until breakfast and have just finished my second sachet and am hooked!!! It was filling , hot, felt like I was eating healthily but didnt lack taste. It was creamy and didnt need sweetening but wasnt too sweet or sickly either.It was so easy to make - empty sachet into a bowl, fill empty sachet with the milk (180ml semi skimmed) pour- two minutes in the microwave and thats it!Whats even better is that my washing up bowl only contains a bowl and a spoon! There are also instructions for preparing in a pan on the hob for those who dont use a microwave.
I have recently discovered this porridge and think its just about the best thing since sliced bread. It is quick, convenient, non messy and filling and simply enough for kids over about 8 to make themselves of a morning.
There are several different flavours, some of which include fruit but the golden syrup is the most popular in my house. You get 10 sachets in the pack and you know that it is quality as its made by Quaker Oats a well trusted brand.
The main ingredient at 76% is wholegrain rolled oats and it only contains 3% of an adults recommended salt in take and 9% of an adults sugar intake.
The mainly blue and yellow box has a large Quaker Oats sign on the front and mentions that this is a natural way to lower cholesterol.
One of the reasons I think this is the best thing since sliced bread is the fact that it comes in individual sealed packages. This is important because if you have kids like mine who never close packages up properly there is always the worry of something getting in there or the product reacting to the air. The other reason and this is my favourite, you don't have to get out a measuring jug and faff around measuring and pouring, you simply empty the sachet into the bowl and then fill the empty packet with milk and add it to the bowl and stir. Anything that saves washing up is ok in my book.
Then all you need to do is microwave it on full power for 2 and a half minutes and breakfast is ready. Word of warning though, make sure there is plenty of room in the bowl as the first time we made it using a shallow bowl the microwave turntable was covered in porridge as it rises up during cooking.
As the porridge cooks you can smell the delicious mix of oats and golden syrup and when cooked the dish looks very appetizing. It tastes thick, creamy and delicious.
This is a fast and easy breakfast especially in the winter months and clean up is a breeze, just the bowl you cooked it in as the packet which you poured the milk into goes straight into the bin.
It is a good bowl full rather than a skimpy amount and would certainly stave off hunger pangs until lunchtime.

I would recommend this as a healthy, quick breakfast which will keep adults and kids full up to lunch time - tasty too. I have even been known to have this for dinner if I'm home late from work and want something quick, hot and filling.

Whilst eating my breakfast this morning I suddenly realised that I hadn't written a review about Oats So Simple - what an omission! This is such a delicious product I am about to remedy this at once!
When the mornings are getting colder I do like a bowl of porridge to start the day, but I can't be bothered measuring stuff and making it from scratch even with the microwave! Yes, I know, how idle can you get? Bearing this affliction in mind Oats So Simple is just right for me.
It is made by Quaker Oats so we know from the outset that it is going to be good.
The cereal comes in boxes of 8, 16 or 20 sachets and currently cost £1.42, £2.72 and £2.72 respectively at Tesco's. Like me you may think that it is odd that the 16 sachet and 20 sachet pack cost the same but after further investigation the sachets in the 16 pack are 35g each and the ones on the 20 sachet pack are 27g each. It seems a bit silly to produce two different sizes of sachet but there it is.
It is also worth mentioning at this point that there are often special offers on this product in Tesco.
Oats So Simple comes in a variety of flavours namely original (with no added flavour), golden syrup, raspberry, apple and blueberry and baked apple. There also appears to be a new product on the Tesco website called Oats So Simple with Toppings so I shall have to check this one out and report back.
The box is smaller and squatter than your average cereal pack. It has the Quaker Oats name and the logo of the Quaker at the top. The rest of the pack depicts a blue sky over a golden cornfield. Being the golden syrup version, which is my favourite, it also has a picture of a container of syrup with a spoonful being lifted out at the bottom left hand corner of the pack.
The pack also sports a heart logo with the words 'Natures way to lower cholesterol' written in a circle around it. Along the bottom of the pack there is the usual nutritional information to show how much sugar, salt etc there is in the product.
Written in white lettering along one edge of the pack are the words 'Morning Sunshine!', hence the title of the review.
On the back of the pack there are various bits of information about the benefits of oats, renewable resources and high cholesterol.
The other edge of the pack has the instructions for preparation using either a microwave or a saucepan on the hob. It also gives the specific nutritional information, including the calorie value of the cereal. Incidentally this is 216 calories when made up with semi skimmed milk.
The smell as the cereal cooks is just an ordinary porridge smell, so very nice but nothing extraordinary.
The taste - well that's something else. It is smooth and creamy and tastes just sweet enough to be delicious without being sickly. A word of warning though - it will be very hot when it comes out of the microwave so be careful!
To make the cereal you just empty the sachet into a bowl, then refill the sachet with milk and empty that into the bowl and then microwave for 2.5 minutes on full power - simple! Even though it does tell you both on the box and the sachet to reuse the empty sachet to measure out your milk I hadn't noticed until a friend of ours came to stay and I saw him do it! Well I'm even dozier than usual first thing in the morning!
If you want to make this in a saucepan on the hob just put the oats and 180ml of milk in the pan and simmer for 2 minutes.
I like the original version, but I have to admit I do prefer the golden syrup version as I do have a sweet tooth but at 216 calories for a breakfast that's not bad is it? At least I am having the goodness of oats which will help my heart and help keep my cholesterol at a good level.
