Like many people I have been trying to save money by reducing my food bill. I have always been keen on Kellogg's fruit and fibre breakfast cereal but recently decided to swap to the Tesco own brand version of the cereal. Tesco fruit and fibre comes in a box that looks remarkably like the Kellogg's box! Both have a purple background with a picture of whole flaks and plump juicy looking fruit cascading down the box. It all looks very appealing and is of course meant to persuade you to buy. There is a big difference in the price between the two brands with a 750 gram box of Kellogg's fruit and fibre costing £2.36 and a 750 gram box of the Tesco version costing just£ 1.20. So is the extra cost of Kellogg's worth it?
Tesco fruit and fibre comes in either a 500 gram box or 750, just as Kellogg's does. I checked the ingredients list for both cereals and they are pretty similar. Both have wholegrain wheat flakes as the main ingredient, followed by raisins. I love raisins in cereal; the more the better! Kellogg's wins here with its version containing 28% raisins whilst the Tesco version has just 16% .Both cereals contain banana chips, apple and coconut and both contain almonds and hazelnut pieces.
I am always keen to read the nutritional value of the food I buy and the Kellogg's version is a lower in calories, sugar and fat than the Tesco version. Each 100 grams of Kellogg's contains 355 calories, 25 grams of sugar and 5 grams of fat, whilst the Tesco version has 370 calories, 26.5 grams of sugar and 6.6 grams of fat. Both brands do contain B vitamins, niacin, folic acid and Iron. Although the difference is not that great it all adds up! I don't consider either of these cereals to be a healthy option as they are far too high in sugar.
The all important taste test reveals that these cereals are very similar and I'm not sure I would be able to tell them apart if I didn't know which was which! I could detect less of my beloved raisins in the Tesco brand and the nuts were a bit less in evidence. The Kellogg's version is less sweet and I prefer it that way! The wheat flakes looked the same and the texture was similar, with both remaining crunchy for some time after adding milk.
Overall I have to say that I think the Kellogg's brand is a superior product but I really don't think it justifies costing nearly twice as much as the Tesco version! The Tesco version is pleasant enough and if there were a few more raisins and a bit less sugar I would always buy it. However despite the extra cost I will be sticking to Kellogg's although won't be buying it that often!
