Tesco Value Coco Snaps
Advantages: taste, value for money
Disadvantages: slightly bitter, artificial
For the past few months I have tried to make better choices budget wise when food shopping and have started to try alternatives to the big brand names all with varying degrees of success. Breakfast cereal is one of those essential things that I always buy in and generally I make my choices based on whatever is on offer or whatever takes my fancy.
Tesco's Choco Snaps (not Coco Snaps as Dooyoo have called them) are the supermarkets own brand take on Coco Pops and in my local supermarket are situated next to the more expensive big brand. Packaging wise Tesco have adopted the same bright yellow colouring on the box as its counterpart and rather than a monkey character we have a lion illustrated in big, bold colours. The box informs us that these are a toasted crisp rice coated with milk chocolate breakfast cereal and are fortified with vitamins and iron and are a source of folic acid.
Opening the box and prizing apart the clear cellophane bag you see the individual rice pieces, each one a chocolate brown colour and the noticeable scent of cocoa is evident. For all intents and purposes these are identical in appearance to the more expensive version, but do they taste the same?
Once milk has been added the rice pieces start to lose some of their chocolate coating, which in turn does flavour the milk. The pieces retain their crunch and texture and the flavouring is slightly on the bitter side rather than overly sweet. This is the only area where there is a difference between these and Coco Pops, the Tesco brand does taste more like cocoa than chocolate and I didn't find these quite as tasty as the premium brand. There is a slight artificial aftertaste with these but for what I paid for them compared to Coco Pops I am willing to forgive them for not being identical.
My 375 gram box cost £1.57, Coco Pops normally retail for around £2.40 for the same amount so these do offer a decent saving. Nutrition wise being a chocolate covered breakfast cereal there is bound to be a decent amount of sugar included and this is confirmed with the information provided. A 30 gram serving with semi-skimmed milk provides 175 calories, 2.9 grams of fat of which 1.9 grams are saturates and a whopping 17.1 grams of sugar. Not great when you consider there are far healthier options available for breakfast but for those with a sweet tooth they do pack a chocolaty punch which should set you up for the day.
Allergy information on the pack warns that they do contain Barley Malt Extract, Milk, Whey, Soya & Soya Lecithins and may contain nuts, so if those are of concern you may want to steer clear of these.
Overall I did enjoy these and they are a great alterative to Coco Pops, whilst the flavour isn't quite the same the difference is negligible and wouldn't put me off eating them again. The only area of concern to me is the sugar content, but as I can make allowances in other areas of my diet this doesn't worry me too much and I was aware of the content when made the decision to buy them so it wasn't a huge surprise.
I would recommend these to anyone who is fond of the big brand alternative, value for money wise they are exceptional and they do provide a tasty breakfast meal. An overall, fair rating from me would be 4/5 Dooyoo stars only losing one for the slight artificial taste and the sugar content. However all things considered they are a brilliant choice and one that I would buy again.
