Bored of rice? Trying to lose a bit of weight? Cutting down on wheat products? Buckwheat is an excellent alternative to rice or pasta and other forms of simple carbohydrates which our digestive systems convert quickly into sugar, encouraging weight gain, making us feel hungry again in a couple of hours... Stop! Try a more complex grain such as buckwheat: it has a lovely nutty flavour and takes a modest 15-20 mins to cook on the hob. Related to the rhubarb plant, no-one seems to be able to explain why the word "wheat" is contained in this grain's name. It contains more protein than many other grains such as rice, and it is completely non-glutenous, ideal for anyone with an intolerance to wheat produce. Serve as part of vegetable or meat dishes, mixing in some Bouillion powder into it (vegetable salt, a bit like Oxo but gluten free) and a bit of Thai green curry paste for a kick or just some tomato puree. Enjoy!
