White's Only Oats Porridge
Advantages: Easy to make, natural ingredients, wholegrain.
Disadvantages: Not suitable for those with a gluten, soya or cow's milk allergy
I don't usually review many food items, but I was so impressed with these porridge oats that I felt I had to share.
White's are a company that have been milling oats since 1841 in Tandragee, Co. Armagh in Northern Ireland. They also have a website www.whitesoats.co.uk. They produce a variety of breakfast foods inclusing White's speedicook porridge, white's toasted oats, fruit porridge as well as an organic range of oat flake based porridge.
I had previously always bought White's speedicook porridge for breakfast, but when my local Tesco (for no apparent reason) seemed to stop stocking it, I had to look for another porridge. On offer at the time, where these White's 'only oats' porridge sachets, which claim on the front of the box to only take 90 secondes to microwave. Now, these usually retail at just under £1.50 for 10 sachets (30g in each), although I bought my first box at half price. At the moment however, White's are offering a 25p money off coupon inside each box that can be put towards your next purchase.
White's also claim on the front of their box that these porridge oats are 'wholesome and wholegrain' and with all the talk about having wholegrain in a healthy diet, that is obviously a huge plus point of this porridge, compared even with ready brek who don't appear to use wholegrain oats.
Making the porridge is super fast and super easy. Simply empty the contents of a sachet into a microwaveable bowl and pour in 160ml of milk (or water if preferred) and stir. Then mircowave on high for 90 seconds (850w oven) or 110 seconds (650w oven). You are then meant to stir the porridge and let it stand for a minute. I don't think I have ever let it stand for a minute, since I am always in a hurry in the morning, and I don't think it alters the great taste. I also found, that after making the porridge a few times, I was able to judge how much milk to put in, rather than having to get out the measuring jug each time.
There is also the option, that if you don't have a microwave you can make these porridge oats in a saucepan, by simply boiling 160ml of milk or water and then stirring in the contents of the sachet, simmering for 90 seconds or until milk/water has been absorbed.
The product also claims to be suitable for vegetarians, and contains no added salt, sugar and is made without artificial colours, flavourings or preservatives, making it a very natural healthy breakfast option, as well as being 'naturally high in fibre'.
Since these oats have no added salt or sugar, the porridge itself tastes really natural and wholesome (as claimed). I often add dried fruit or nuts to give it some additional flavourings, but it is perfectly nice on its own. The texture of the porridge (when milk is added) is very creamy and thick, and it's so filling, that I can go without looking for food for at least 3/4 hours (which is great for someone like me who always seems to be hungry). A normal cereal only fills me for a couple of hours, so this is a great advantage, as well as being good for you.
It does state however, on the back of the box, for those who suffer with allergies, that the oats may contain traces of wheat due to farming practices, as well as traces of soya, cow's milk, and gluten. So it is worth bearing in mind if you are allergic to any of these items.
All in all, I love these oats for several key reasons:
- They are good for you - having the wholegrain, as well as having no added salt or sugar.
- They are so easy to prepare when you are in a hurry in the morning. You don't have to measure out porridge oats from a bag, just pour in the sachet contents and the milk.
- They taste really natural.
- They keep me filled up for hours, without even the slightest hint of a tummy rumble.
Anyone who likes porridge and likes to maintain a healthy diet should definitely give these oats a go, and if you are anything like me, you wouldn't go back to another after trying these!
Summary: A great filling breakfast porridge, tasting so natural!
