In the past, I have had to set up many home office connections for people to connect to their main office. ISDN is still an expensive thing to own these days so not manyhome users have them so this is really aimed at small business/small office.

Routers are a 'gateway' between you and another network. Your network is 'internal' anything else is 'external' When you want to access a different network, the router switches your data onto the external network to its fianl destination. A very simplified explanation I might add.

What this little box does for you is instead of having a modem in each PC to dial into the internet or your remote main office, you have a network card in your PC connected to the ISDN router. When you want to access the Internet or main office, the router automatically dials a preconfigured number and connects you to the network at the other end.

I have found 3Com ISDN routers very reliable in the past and easy to configure for simple or very complex networks. The cost is a bit prohibitive for home users once you add up the ISDN costs. Very reliable hardware.
