The Cisco 7140 series integrates key features of VPNs - tunneling, data encryption, security, firewall, advanced bandwidth management, and service-level validation - to provide secure, scalable VPN platforms to better and more cost-effectively accommodate remote-access, remote-office, and extranet connectivity using public data services.

The Cisco 7140 series VPN router offers specific hardware configurations and a processing architecture optimized for VPN applications and WAN Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) environments, delivering turnkey VPN and WAN edge router solutions for larger regional offices and corporate headquarters. The Cisco 7140 series features integrated LAN interfaces for connectivity to the corporate LAN or VPN termination behind the WAN edge as well as optional multiport WAN interfaces, providing multihomed connectivity to the VPN cloud. With its millions of instructions per second (mips) RISC processor, the Cisco 7140 series VPN router delivers robust VPN features, such as bandwidth management and firewall, at speeds greater than 90 Mbps, as well as scalable tunneling and encryption services.

The Cisco 7140 series VPN router is further customizable through hardware and software options to accommodate diverse network architectures and requirements. An open expansion slot enables LAN/WAN interface customization by utilizing a Cisco 7xxx series port adapter. Highly scalable tunneling and encryption are provided by the integrated services module (ISM), which delivers up to 2000 simultaneous sessions for remote access and Data Encryption Standard 3 (3DES) IPSecurity (IPSec) encryption at full duplex DS3 speeds (90 Mbps) for site-to-site VPNs. Alternatively, the ISM can support up to 2000 simultaneous Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) users for remote access with strong, 128-bit Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption (MPPE). Advanced perimeter security and intrusion detection, key features in a secure VPN solution, are also provided on the Cisco 7140 series via the Cisco IOS Firewall Feature Set.
