Advantages: Free, Easy, allows files to be moves
Disadvantages: Slow
Using my Sony Ericsson phone as an MP3 player and a camera I end up needing to meddle with files and wanting to change the different things on the memory of the phone. The ranges from perhaps sending a photo to a friend of her looking rather attractive in the shower, to putting on a music album to listen to, from putting on an internet browser (Opera Mini 4.2 for example) to putting games on it. This all needs to be done via a computer and theirs 2 ways to do, either via a memory card adaptor or via one of these cables, using a memory card adaptor however only allows you to manipulate the data on the card so to utilise the phones memory you need one of these.
The device is simple to attach using the 4 pin end just plugs straight into the charger/headphone part of the phone and the other end is a now standard USB connector that plugs straight into your PC/Laptop. The computer device should recognise the phone almost immediately and allow you to get to moving, copying and deleting files and off you go.
So with the device connected it's simple to go about the file manipulation that you're wanting, putting the pictures from one to the other and the same for music is incredibly easy. However it is quite slow and arduous in a time respect as it's not exactly fast, infact if you're just using the memory card it's much quicker to use the card adaptor. Though with the phone I have (the Sony Ericsson C902) it can take a while to get the card out of the device and to get it back in, so if it's only a few files it's much quicker to actually just use the cable.
The length of the cable can be a little bit of a problem, however it's unlikely to do so unless you want to sit so far from your phone you can't see it, a foot or about in length will do just fine. The connection is well connected and solid and unless you give it quite a tough tug it won't fall out so you needn't worry about that falling out whilst you're doing your thing.
With the device coming free with most Sony phones you won't need to splash out for something to make you're phone more complete (yeah I'm looking at you Microsoft), and despite the different versions of the cable they all seem solid and are a valueless freebie. So with that in mind you may be swung on which phone to have, as I realise my little cheap Nokia never had any sort of a cable to hook it up to a PC which was hugely disappointing.
Overall the cable will allow you to get the most out of your phone however it is slow and can be tedious with the times it can take if you're moving several gigs of files. If it's just a handful of pictures (like I assume most people will be doing) it takes a matter of seconds rather than minutes, though if it's a few album of music it can take 5 or 6 minutes per album. Rather frustrating at times to be quite honest with you though it works, it's free and it allows you to get access to your phone and memory card at the same time.
Summary: Slow but free, a useful device
