This is a traditional French press. It can take any type of coffee if it is marketed as for all machines types or ground say at Whittards, on grind number 8 / coarsely.
By warming up the pot first, you are giving the glass a better chance at withstanding the heat and helping produce a nicer taste of coffee.
I purchased a 6 cup, but this also comes in 3 and 8 cup sizes.
There are various reasons I have given this a one heart rating.
1] There is no mat or heat pad that comes with this. So you have to be careful when lifting it that you do not automatically handle the bottom of what is going to be a very hot glass.
2] The silver band as shown in the design is extremely weak and moves after a few uses. You could try turning the screw by the handle, but it didn't work for us. So it felt like the glass was going to come away.
3[ Handle was very weak, the whole plastic look actually felt weak and unstable. The lid moved way too much.
4] Coffee grinds came through.
We asked the assistant in the store we purchased this from to replace it but after trying three times we brought another brand altogether. We like and do trust Bodum but this range is not well designed or thought out.
It could quite possibly lead to an accident so be careful Dooyooers. x
