I live in a house with coffee drinkers.
We're not talking granules in a cup plus hot water - oh no; we have every gadget going to make the.best.cup.of.coffee.
And by far the simplest gadget that makes the best cup?
The La Cafetiere Classic 8 cup.
Kettle on, ground coffee in the cafetiere, boiling water on: simple.
But it's in the engineering of this La Cafetiere that the perfection lies: other, lesser coffee makers just don't measure up.
This model, time and again, is perfection itself.
As the plunger sinks into the molten liquid, the seal around the edge is engineered so that no grounds find their way into your boiling cup of Joe.
Having tried - and tested - many, many ways of making the coffee, I know which product we will return to time after time.
We have acquired various cafetieres and coffee makers / machines over the years and have three of this plunger style in different sizes. We have a 2 cup, this 8 cup and a 12 cup version, useful for when we have guests staying or a big dinner party. The cafetieres are quite stylish and definitely well built. The main jug is glass and the black plastic handle is securely attached. The cafetiere works by removing the lid with its attached plunger and putting the required amount of coffee grounds in the jug, you then add the hot water, give it a stir and replace the lid with the plunger at its highest position. After a couple of minutes of letting the coffee brew you push the plunger down, this is inexplicably pleasurable. The plunger separates the coffee grounds from the liquid so you don't get gritty bits in your drink. This works really well and the coffee is good, depending of course, on the quality of coffee you have used!
What I don't like about the cafetiere is cleaning it, it's not really that difficult but for some reason in our house it is something we try to avoid! If you're not happy about the coffee grounds going down the sink, which obviously you shouldn't really do if you don't want a blocked sink, then you need to scoop them out of the bottom somehow. Also then cleaning the plunger and its filter bit always seems more of an effort than it should be, the tiny grounds of coffee just want to stick in all the nooks and crannies.
The coffee it makes is definitely of superior quality than any instant coffee we've used and it is less hassle all round than using our big coffee machine, but I just wish it cleaned itself!
