When we bought our camcorder we wanted it mainly to record special events, family days out, and every day times to catch the kids growing up. We didn't want to spend too much but we didn't want to compromise on the quality.
The Samsung VPA30 8mm is an excellent buy. It costs around £250 and has many handy features.
The zoom is fantastic (x16) and the picture quality is so clear. It has an auto-manual focus so you can choose which you want to use, and 7 special effects which are a great source of entertainment in our house!
It also has a date and time insert and you can also put a message on your recordings according to the occasion, such as "Our Baby", "Happy Birthday" and many more to choose from.
It comes complete with battery, charger, cable, adaptor and shoulder strap (and of course the instruction manual but I am sure nobody reads that!)
If you want to buy a camcorder but don't want to pay a silly price I would strongly recommend this one.
