For those of us who are not exactly camera officianado`s, the Flip ultra HD video comera is perfect its simple, its light and most importantly 'I suppose' its inexpensive. So when you have you you have to think how could I use this- perhaps underwater, maybe not, but you do think that it would be cool to video tape underwater.
Now those with the Flip will know that for all those pro`s there is a fairly serous con, the quality is acceptable for the price lets just say that ! Its not terrible , but its not really great either. So putting a big thick plastic case over the lens doesnt sound like it will make that situation any better. You can purchase this case and as you would expect the case fits perfectly over your Flip Ultra Video. The case will make it waterproof up to 30 feet in depth, so some scuba divers wont be able to use it , but I imagine they have something better anyway, but for us casual swimmers its fine.
This case is clear hard plastic resin and the controls act as proxy buttons and they fit over the control buttons on the Flip. This means that you can still use the simple and easy controls underwater. Such as switching on and off, recording or replaying your favourite videos.
To be honest the microphone is a bit of a waste of time unless the person goes right up to the camera, but I suppose that has to be expected. But the picture comes out very well through the clear plastic resin, as long as ou keep it nice and clean. The case is 99% waterproof really, after a while underwater I noticed one or two drops in the cae, its best to keep an eye out for these and take the camera out and wipe it down as soon as you spot them, you dont really want to keep them in there, they could bugger up the whole camera.
The problem is though, actually filming , pointing and shooting underwater is not the easiest, not unless oyu have some goggles on, so it can be hard to see the screen in a amurky, chlorine filled pool.
You can purchase this case on Amazon.co.uk for £39.99, this is the official flip merchandise, you can get a cheaper one called the aquapac for £7, but I wouldnt want to cut corners when dropping my £80 flip into a swimming pool if you know what I mean !
I always felt worried when I used this product for the first time. A flip video is an expensive product and I wasn't keen on taking it in the pool with me, but I can safely assure you that this waterproof case works.
The case seals around the Flip Video and makes a rubber seal and a plastic case on top for double protection. All of the controls are still useable when the case is on. They are somewhat harder to use than without the case but still useable.
The nylon wrist strap is poorly designed. When wet the wrist strap gets fragile and started falling to bits. It also started smelling bad and wasn't pleasant to use after a few uses.
Another disadvantage is that the case is very hard to see through in sunlight, as the sunlight reflects off the plastic case. You just have to point and hope for the best, which means I've missed many a moment on my camera.
Overall the product is trustworthy and will protect your camera from water. The only problem is that the usability of the product is reduced with this case.
I have found this flip video underwater case to be a great addition to my flip video camcorder. It is very simple to put over the flip video itself which is very useful. Furthermore, the camcorder with the case on remains very functional and the buttons are easy to access. I found this particularly useful when in a swimming pool and in the sea because it remains very easy to use.
The case can protect the camcorder down to 30 feet which I found ample. For example, in most swimming pools and in the sea I found that I rarely went under 10ft. However, if you were interested in using the case for diving I would not recommend it given that 30 feet will not be enough.
The case I thought was very well built and really did meet my expectations on that front. Having used it in both the sea and in a swimming pool (even when surfing) it really does protect the camcorder very well indeed. The underwater case definitely does what it says on the tin.
I bought this case for £23 on Amazon which is quite expensive if your likely to use it for the one off. However, I found that I began using the camcorder increasingly. The case really doesn't affect the video quality very much at all which I thought was ideal. It is also very easy to put the camera into the case and take it out of the case which is just what you want.
I really think that this is a great addition if you have a Flip video camcorder and I would really recommend it if you think you'll be using your camcorder under water. It really does do everything you would expect and crucially keeps the camcorder itself safe and for that reason alone I think that it is a great product.
This case fits over your Flip Ultra Video and makes it waterproof up to 30 feet in depth.
It's a clear plastic case with controls that fit over the control buttons on the Flip. This means that while you're underwater you can do everything related to switching on and off, videoing or replaying videos.
I tested the underwater case when we went on holiday to the Canary Islands. I tested it in the sea and in the swimming pool. The deepest that I took it to must have only been about 5 feet, and it worked brilliantly.
Even though it was sealed, it still let enough sound through.
When filming underwater, I found it hard to see the LCD screen clearly, so a lot of the time I was pointing and guessing.
At the end of about half an hour of off and on filming underwater, I found one or two drops of water inside the casing. This wasn't a problem, and I just wiped it off with a towel when I took the Flip out of the case. I assumed that it was a touch of condensation, and in fact the instructions that come with the underwater case do warn of this.
However, I have seen online that some people had serious leakage problems. So I would recommend that if you buy this product you should test it out by dipping it into and out of water quickly just to be on the safe side. Having said that, any experiences I've had with this underwater case have been excellent and great fun.
