Advantages: Robust design, does the job well
Disadvantages: little expensive, cheaper alternatives on the market !
For those of us who are not exactly camera officianado`s, the Flip ultra HD video comera is perfect its simple, its light and most importantly 'I suppose' its inexpensive. So when you have you you have to think how could I use this- perhaps underwater, maybe not, but you do think that it would be cool to video tape underwater.
Now those with the Flip will know that for all those pro`s there is a fairly serous con, the quality is acceptable for the price lets just say that ! Its not terrible , but its not really great either. So putting a big thick plastic case over the lens doesnt sound like it will make that situation any better. You can purchase this case and as you would expect the case fits perfectly over your Flip Ultra Video. The case will make it waterproof up to 30 feet in depth, so some scuba divers wont be able to use it , but I imagine they have something better anyway, but for us casual swimmers its fine.
This case is clear hard plastic resin and the controls act as proxy buttons and they fit over the control buttons on the Flip. This means that you can still use the simple and easy controls underwater. Such as switching on and off, recording or replaying your favourite videos.
To be honest the microphone is a bit of a waste of time unless the person goes right up to the camera, but I suppose that has to be expected. But the picture comes out very well through the clear plastic resin, as long as ou keep it nice and clean. The case is 99% waterproof really, after a while underwater I noticed one or two drops in the cae, its best to keep an eye out for these and take the camera out and wipe it down as soon as you spot them, you dont really want to keep them in there, they could bugger up the whole camera.
The problem is though, actually filming , pointing and shooting underwater is not the easiest, not unless oyu have some goggles on, so it can be hard to see the screen in a amurky, chlorine filled pool.
You can purchase this case on Amazon.co.uk for £39.99, this is the official flip merchandise, you can get a cheaper one called the aquapac for £7, but I wouldnt want to cut corners when dropping my £80 flip into a swimming pool if you know what I mean !
Summary: Go for the official merchandise- not the cheap imitations
