Having spent around £160 on a new digital camera last year, it seemed silly not to buy a decent case to keep it shiny and new and, most importantly, protected from any accidents. Our camera (the Panasonic Lumix FS15) is a very compact slimline camera so we needed quite a small case to accommodate it.
A quick online search revealed that Lowepro were quite a well-respected and established manufacturer of leather cases and the dimensions of the Napoli 10 case met our requirements. (The specific inner dimensions of this case are 5.8cmW x 2.7cmD x 9.5cmH) Back in June 2009, we ordered our case from mymemory.co.uk and paid £11.99, including postage. This specific case doesn't appear to be listed on that site any more but it is still widely available and can be picked up from Amazon for a similar price.
Having ordered online and not having the opportunity to inspect the quality and design of the case beforehand, I was very pleased with the case when it arrived. It fits our Lumix FS15 perfectly, almost as though it was specifically made for it. The case has a black leather exterior and a soft suede lining inside which is very gentle against the camera itself. There is also a belt loop at the back, although I don't think we've ever tried to loop it through as we tend to keep this loose in our bag or in a pocket.
The feature that I particularly like about this case is the method of closing. Rather than having a zip or press stud or even velcro type closure, this simply has a magnetic flap. This is particularly useful for those times when you need to get hold of your camera quickly as the flap opens instantly with no faffing about. The closure is also less likely to become damaged than other methods.
We also make use of the handy slot at the top of the case which allows the camera cord to be threaded through. This seems to make the camera seem more secure inside the case as well as meaning that we can hold the camera by its cord, even when it is inside its case.
Despite being made from a very soft, good quality leather the sides of the case are reinforced so that it keeps its shape even when empty. These strengthened sides offer extra protection for the camera, even if dropped or thrown about in the bottom of our changing bag where it tends to live, ready for those special photo opportunities.
We've owned our case for over a year now and it has been carried about all over the place as part of our family life. Thankfully, neither the camera or the case have come to any harm, as yet, despite being treated quite roughly at times. In fact, the exterior of the case still looks brand new - there are no visible scuffs or signs of fading or any other type of wear. It is only when holding the case up to the light that it is possible to detect a few tiny scratches on the leather. Considering the treatment the case endures and the amount of use it has, this clearly shows what a quality purchase we have made.
I'd certainly recommend this specific case for owners of compact cameras and Lowepro leather cases in general as they have a wide range of different sizes and styles available.
