I wanted to get a new camera as my old one was a bit antiquated and has seen better days. A friend of mine who is an avid photographer convinced me to get a digital single lens reflex (dslr) to replace the old one as the quality of photos taken is much more superior compared to a typical digital compact camera. I did my survey and finally invested in a Nikon D40 as I did not want to spend too much for my first DSLR. Obviously with the new camera, I needed a bag to give it as much protection as I can. I could not simply slide it into my handbag or pocket as I used to do with my compact camera. Hence, the hunt for a good and reliable camera bag then ensued. There are lots of camera bags in the market and the top brands include Lowepro, Samsonite, Crumpler, Tamrac etc. Needless to say, they are reliable as they are expensive. After a day of comparing prices on various websites, I stumbled upon a bargain on Amazon for this Lowepro Topload Mini Zoom Case for £9.79!! (Average retail price: £19-£37) It was only the green one which was on offer but hey...if it means that I could save more than 50%, I really would not mind at all. Whilst price was one of the main deciding factor, I would not compromise on the quality and reliability simply because of a bargain. After reading numerous reviews, these are the qualities which closed the deal:
- Lowepro is a renowned brand for camera bags and are made using high quality materials. For this particular model, Water-resistant 600D TXP" and 600D TXP" ripstop is used (ripstop is a lightweight nylon fabric and is the primary material used in hot air balloons); [source: Amazon & Wikipedia]
- It is a perfect fit for a small dslr like Nikon D40 with 18-55mm lens attached. There is even an expandable front pocket and an inner laminated mesh pocket for extra SD cards or filters. The adjustable strap can be used as a shoulder strap or around your waist. Dimensions of the bag: 15 x 10 x 16.5cm and it weighs about 180g.
- The bag comes with a clever reverse-open lid which makes it really convenient to get the camera in and out whilst hanging on your shoulder. The whole bag, as well as the hand grip is well padded and is ideal for any photography outings.
In short, unless and until I decide to take my photography interest to the next level and get more lens and a better camera, this little bag remains the perfect partner for my Nikon D40.
