Canon EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens ... got my Canon EF100-400 IS lens for bird photography, and it is a fantastic lens for all-round bird and wildlife photography. Image quality is excellent as you d expect from a Canon L series lens, and the image stabilisation works very well - it is possible to handhold the lens down to 1/100 and still get very good bird pictures provided the subject isn t moving much. Weighing in at over 1.5kg including the tripod collar (supplied) there s no getting away from it, this is a heavy lens. Sigma 150mm F/2.8 EX IF HSM ... is a proper macro lens, being able to focus to a 1:1 ratio, that means at closest focus an object measuring 5mm will project a 5mm image onto the sensor or film. A lot of lenses put marco on the label without having a true macro ability. The focal length of 150mm is very versatile. You can photograph insects and other creatures without having to get too close. The large aperture of f/2.8 lets in plenty of light, and combined with the 150mm focal length allows for a beautifully restricted depth of focus. Sigma 500mm F/4.5 APO DG HSM ... is a large prime lens and currently costs £3000 to £4000 depending on where you get it, so reading this you will probably have sussed out it s spec on the sigma website already. Being a sigma lens it is available for sigma, canon and nikon lenses. I use a nikon D300 so on this I base my review, although it will be equally applicable to other mounts. Most people who get this lens will either do so for photographing wildlife or sports. And for these it is ideal. 500mm gives you plenty of reach, letting you photograph the action from the sidelines with ease, or get close to wildlife without disturbing it.
