Advantages: Superb image quality, focussing and maximum aperture size.

Disadvantages: Slightly flimsy plastic build quality

This is widely considered to be the finest lens per pound that a Canon user can buy.
It can usually be picked up second hand for somewhere around £50.

Wide open, the 1.8 aperture means that it can comfortably be used for indoor portraiture, and the resulting image quality is second to none. It is a fixed lens, so the lack of a zoom ability is a drawback for some- although it results in finer optical quality (and improves your ability to compose images!).

The build quality is not that great- in that the lens feels a little flimsy. Having said that it has never brought me any problems.

Another plus for this lens is that the actual lens itself is recessed in the front of the housing, which reduces the number of potential scratches or fingerprints that it could pick up.

All in all- this should be the first lens you buy when graduating from a kit-lens.

Summary: Awesome- but it!
