Advantages: Cheap, Sharp, Nice Bokeh, Lightweight
Disadvantages: Slow to focus, Noisy, Small focussing ring
I bought this lens at the sime time as my 400d, and they go very well together. I didn't take this lens off my camera for absolutely ages.
Out of the box, the lens is very small in comparison to just about all others. It feels very light, and not particularly substantial. It does feel cheaply built and it does rattle slightly. It is definitely not a well engineered precision instrument like the L lenses. The focussing is noisy and quite slow, and also the focussing ring is very small and fiddly. This is not designed for manual focussing, but it is useable.
When the lens is connected to your camera and you press the shutter the magic happens! The bokeh when wide open is lovely, and the sharpness of the lens is very good at all apertures. The wide aperture enables this lens to be used in low light situations, and is great for indoor portraits. The fact that this lens is a prime means that you "zoom with your feet" and does focus your mind on your composition.
Pros
- Cheap as Chips
- Very Sharp
- Lovely Bokeh
- Small and lightweight
Cons
- Noisy and slow
- Low build quality
- Small focussing ring
Summary
This little lens is a beauy. The image quality per pound is unbeatable. It feels cheap, but that's because it is! Buy this lens.
Summary: Great cheap lens - buy it
