Canon EF 50mm f1.8 MK2
Advantages: Cheap, fast, quality
Disadvantages: Build quality could be better
I was asked to photgraph my brother in laws band as a favour to them, as a keen amature I lept at the chance as it was something I had never done before, however on my first attempt I was limited to the standard lens that came with my canon 20D camera and the results were less than pleasing, I struggled with the low light and getting back grounds blurred. Afer this dissapointment I realsied I needed a quick (low aperture) lens, and with limited budget was struggling, then I found the Nifty Fifty, canons 50mm 1.8 mark 2 lens, and boy has it improved my photography!!
My second attempt at shooting the band was a dream, the low lighting combined with the superb image quality of the new lens gave me some terriffic pictures, some can be seen on my myspace page (search for beolensphotography not sure links are allowed).
Since that day I have used the lens for portraits, landscapes, and close up work all with excellent results.
The low 1.8 aperture gives superb depth of field control and while there are other 50mm lenses that are even quicker (lower aperture) they come with a hefty price tag, where as this little Gem can be picked up for well under the £100 mark.
The build quality of the mark two is rather cheap, but then so is the cost, that doens't mean it is fragile though and mine has taken a few knocks with absolutely no damage.
The "Niffty Fifty" is a must for any photographer, since I purchased this sweet lens it has never left my camera bag.
Summary: An excellent lens a must for all photographers
