I was asked to photgraph my brother in laws band as a favour to them, as a keen amature I lept at the chance as it was something I had never done before, however on my first attempt I was limited to the standard lens that came with my canon 20D camera and the results were less than pleasing, I struggled with the low light and getting back grounds ... I am a budding wedding and portrait photographer, and for the last wedding I shot (that expression does ammuse me!) I wanted a fast lens that would allow me to throw the background completly out of focus. I opted for this lens because it offered me the focal length (even with the 1.6 factor bumping it up) and speed I was looking for, ... Read the complete review

I've owned this lens for about six months now. First impression was it is very light and plastic. I've not had any problems with this but I'm always very careful with it. I'm still scared that a drop will cause it to spring open. I use the lens most for taking portrait shots. As I have a Canon 300D its focus length is multiplied by a 1.6 ... Read the complete review

I bought this lens at the sime time as my 400d, and they go very well together. I didn't take this lens off my camera for absolutely ages. Out of the box, the lens is very small in comparison to just about all others. It feels very light, and not particularly substantial. It does feel cheaply built and it does rattle slightly. It is ... I bought this lens for my Canon EOS 400D and has became my favorite in term of depth of field. You can create photo like you see in the magazine. On my 400D cropped sensor it will approximate an 80mm lens. This means that for full lengh you have to back-up a lot which that might not be possible. However for waist length shot the lense ... I am a professional photographer with 15 years experience. www.flickr.com/ultraphotosonic I got this lens as a christmas present in 2007. I have NEVER been even a little bit satisfied with this lens. IT IS A PIECE OF CRAP! Why? The glass is so cheap that at 1.8, NOTHING is sharp. At 1.8 there is NO plane of focus, it goes from blurry to less ... Read the complete review

I just got this lens through the post today and already I am happy with the results! I have a Canon 400D, which comes with an 18mm - 55mm zoom lens attached, which isn't bad, but it's also not great, especially in low light conditions. Even those pictures taken on nice sunny days or with a fast shutter speed aren't as sharp as you ... Read the complete review

Now this is a down to earth honest little lens it comes in a little box and you open it up and first thing noticed its not the best built lens in the world but hey how much did you pay for it??? so second thing you notice is that its quick, noisy and just really different from other lenses you have used. unfortunately its got plastic ... The 'nifty fifty'! I really love this lens, though I really shoudnt. It is a piece of crap, but it takes fantastic photographs. It looks cheap and nasty but it outperforms a couple of my other lenses. It's a conundrum to be frank - I guess you just have to take it for what it is, a cheap way to add a very handy prime lens to your ... Read the complete review

This is widely considered to be the finest lens per pound that a Canon user can buy. It can usually be picked up second hand for somewhere around £50. Wide open, the 1.8 aperture means that it can comfortably be used for indoor portraiture, and the resulting image quality is second to none. It is a fixed lens, so the lack of a zoom ... I give the 50mm/f1.8 a five, because it's one of the best lenses in terms of value for money. The 50mm/f1.4 is of course good too, but it's almost 3 times more expensive. And some people say they like the bokeh of the 1.8 version more. Well, bokeh is a matter of taste, but there are some other advantages of this lens. First of all, it's ... Read the complete review

I have owned this lens for around five years now. Although far from what I would call a 'quality' lens, it is an ideal introduction to prime lenses. Sadly, the moving front section of my lens broke off shortly after purchase and despite returning it to Canon under warranty, it remains broken. Their suggestion was that the lens had been ... I'm a zoom lens user, however I found a second hand Mk 2 in a local shop, and picked it up for a song (less than 100 Aussie dollars). It's plastic from mount to focus ring, so you have to treat it kind of carefully. This also makes it feather light, so it it a great lens to use all day long. Being able to get down to ...
