      Disadvantages

      Inexpensive and ideal for beginners

I bought this lens because I had just started a photography course at a local college, and didn't want to invest in anything too eye-wateringly expensive until I had decided whether I would be any good at the subject.

As well as getting the lens, the package also comes with a lens cap and case, and being as I was just setting out I was uber cautious about shielding my apparatus from damage, so these accoutrements were more than welcome on my part. The cap is little more than a plastic disc which slots over the lens, but it does so more than adequately, and I always felt confident that my lens was not going to become exposed to outside forces. The case, similarly, was a simple affair that functioned as you might expect. Black in colour, it is fashioned from a hard wearing plastic material, and is shock absorbent in the event that it experiences a drop or fall. Unfortunately even though these extras were included in the package, I had to purchase the LA-DC52 mount adapter separately. It is not possible to fit the lens onto the camera without it, so I did feel a little bit cheated by this. When the lens is attached to the camera however, it is done so securely and there is no danger of it loosening when it has been slotted into position.

For capturing detail the lens is superb. It converts focal distance of the lens by a factor of 2.4, which more than met my requirements when starting out. I experimented with landscapes and seascapes, but found that the lens was most effective when picking up the nuances in say, a flower head or insect. Never having owned a lens prior to this one I was immediately taken by its versatility and scope. I have moved on to other lenses since this one, but I would not hesitate to recommend it to those looking to work on close up projects and not wishing to spend too much in the process.
