After using Olympus OM10 and Canon EOS 100 for 16 years,I decided to have an extra body.I bought Canon EOS-1N,
a top-of-the-line camera.It has often been said that sharp,well-exposed and well-composed photos do not depend so much on expensive, highly sophisticated gadget but rather the techniques and skills of the photographers.Nevertheless, a photographer whether a professional or an amateur always look for a camera with a high degree of reliability so that a photo can be taken at the right moment.After putting 20 rolls of film through the camera,I think Canon Eos-1N is very reliable.No mechanical fault has been detected so far.

It is a camera that instils confidence.Its body fits nicely into the palm and you really feel its robustness.If sufficient care is taken,it will at least last 10 years or so.

Do not underestimate the automatic loading and winding mechanism of films because it ensures that the film move to the next frame after an exposure has been made.Sometimes,if the mechanism whether automatic or mechanical develops a fault,a whole roll of film would not be exposed despite pressing the shutter button the whole day.This causes a lot of frustration to the photographers and the subject concerned.Therefore,a reliable mechanism can avoid the pitfall.

The view-finder,a fixed eye-level pentaprism,shows 100% vertical and horizontal view of the picture to be taken.If it shows 90% of the view,the photographer may estimate the area not within view wrongly and a sharp object may sticks out in the photo and have to resort to cropping.This has been the bane of photographers.

Its shutter speed caters for all situations and extends our creativity.A speed of 1/8000 can freeze the droplets of water above the head of a swimmer in the pool.
It is suitable for sports photography.A speed of 30 seconds is suitable for night photography.X-syn speed of 1/250 is suitable for daylight flash photography.

As time passes,our
needs expand and we have to upgrade our system.For Eos-1N,its lenses,flash units and interchangeable back can be upgraded.Perhaps,we can even make use of the peripherals from the previous system.

Its 5-pt AF with multiple metering patterns is fast and accurate.There is always a choice:auto-exposure or manual-exposure aided by big control dials for easy access.
The fine spot metering ensures correct exposure without using a hand-held meter.Even the cheapest hand-held meter costs US$60 such as Gossen Bisix 2.Spot metering is convenient for the use of print film or slide film which needs very accurate exposure.White or very dark background will not be a problem.If it is portrait,we use the spot meter to meter the face of the subject.This will prevent over-exposure or under-exposure.Although spot meter is important to the photographers,it is not a feature that comes with all cameras.It is only featured in a few cameras.Therefore,it is a strong point for Canon Eos-1N.

The camera with battery weighs 895 grams.It is rather heavy and may induce camera shake.A monopod or tripod have to be used to ensure that the shake is minimized.

The price is rather expensive.But if you consider it as a long-term investment,it is worth it.It may even last you a lifetime if you keep it in a box with silica gels.
