I lived in New Zealand for over two years and developed my love of camping. Since leaving I can appreciate how well equipped New Zealand is for camping compared to other countries. My love of all things tenty was discovered here because New Zealand makes it so easy to get up and go away for the weekend, or longer!

Before I go into the implementation of NZ camping, I would like to point out that this is a country of campers mainly due to the beautiful national parks, varying from beaches, mountains, highlands and volcanic areas. Furthermore add to this a tiny population and miles and miles of untrodden country then camping becomes a reality. Finally I suppose due to New Zealand's relative isolation, Kiwis themselves mostly stay within the two Islands in order to holiday and thus all in all great facilities have been established.

There are plenty of private campsites, all with varying rules regarding pets, vehicles, fires etc but some of the best are the ones owned and operated by the Department of Conversation (DOC). Staying here is basic but earthly with infamous long-drop toilets and not always a guaranteed drinking water supply. However they are generally on beautiful scenic land, cheap ($3 plus!!!), peaceful and keep away the loud, music-playing bunch. There are of course other style campsites but it is pretty hard to beat a DOC site.

Summary: The perfect country for camping - beautiful scenery and great facilities to make the most of it
