Advantages: Caravan perfect

Disadvantages: Site too remote, Noisy pool, Surly Owner

We stayed at the Bella Tola campsite up the hill from the village of Susten on the banks of the River Rhone, courtesy of Canvas Holidays in June 2002. It looks & sounds quite nice when you read the brochure, however we found the swimming pool area full of local kids running about jumping in and out of the pool & squirting each other with sun tan cream whilst the site owner looked on. When I tackled him about it he was fairly abusive and we got nowhere. Obviously he is quite happy charging the locals for the use of the pool but is unwilling to take responsibility to see that all his guests are able to enjoy it. Many of the Eurocamp & Canvas holidaymakers were unhappy with this aspect. A nice local trip is up a neighbouring valley to Leukerbad where there is a lovely spa / bathing complex as well as 2 cable cars to nearby mountains.
Overall however, this part of this region (the Valais) has little charm & we much preferred Manor Farm Campsite at Interlaken & wished we'd stayed there for the whole holiday. Susten itself is a one horse town after the horse died.

Site too remote: The advantage of beeing too remote (but only 1 mile from main street) is the absolute tranquility at night. Something our guests aooreciate very much.

Noisy pool: in all guides the pool is described as open to public. Especially on Wednesdays (day off at schools), our pool is buy. Do you find a busy pool bad? Besides this, the camping guests can use the pool from morning 0700 h to the evenening between 1900 h and 2100 h - we mostly let it open until the last swimmer leaves.

Surly owner: I really cannot remember me beeing surly. I also cannot remember me beeing asked from this Canvas customer about the busy pool. I mus absolutely condemn this unilateral statement, the more all customers like my manners since 29 seasons!

Valai s: This region is one of the most charming-one in Switzerland. As this customer only went to Leukerbad, he is not capable to judge about other resorts, as Zermat with the Matterhorn, the World Heritage of the Aletsch-glacier, the wonderful footpathes, the old and pictoresque villages and so on. Only a pitty, that Canvas changed his courier after beeing introduced by us after several days! Those customers could not be informed enough by the new courier who never dad been here. Sorry also for the customer that he did not take the chance to use all our offers, as leaflets, personal recommendations a s o.
