Advantages: Stunning scenery, simple clean facilities

Disadvantages: Pick the right pitch, or else it is a long walk to the loo!

I am a reluctant camper, being of the opinion that there is a lot to be said about bricks and mortar, especially in out British weather. However, I was persuaded to try a couple of nights in North Devon last weekend, and was pleasantly surprised. It has to be said that the fantastic weather certainly helped, but North Morte farm was the ideal site.

As you drive into the site there are numerous static mobile homes, giving the site a dated feel, however, beyond this is a beautiful camping site. It is rather hilly, and was busy when we were there, so some of the pitches are on a bit of a slant, but the stunning scenery more than makes up for this. We were lucky enough to pitch our tents on the cliff edge, with an unrestricted view of the sea (the isle of Lundy to the right, south Wales to the left!).

The camp site has a family feel, and does not allow large groups, although it was fairly lively. Well behaved dogs are allowed on leads. Although caravans can be booked, tents cannot, the site recommend calling in advance at busy times.

Facilities are simple but good, with a well stocked shop (especially recommended are the fresh baked croissants from a local bakery) and clean, bright toilet/shower block. The site is large and could really do with another block simply because of the long walk from the furthest most tents! There are water taps positioned across the fields, a dog walking area and a nice childrens' playground.

By far the greatest asset has to be the small stoney beach at the foot of the cliff, the principle access is from the campsite (a short but steep walk) so in effect it is a private beach. There is also an 8 mile walk along the coastline for the more adventurous. North Morte Farm has it's focus on the countryside and so lacks the commercial feel of many close by camp sites.

Current prices at the height of the season are £8.50 per adult, £3 per child, which discounts at less popular times.

Summary: A great base to explore the attractive North Devon coast

I love that part of the world. My grandparents used to live near there and I still go back occasionally (I usually stay in an hotel though)
