Advantages: Removes Flat Spots. Improves Performance. Improves Economy & Lowers Emissions
Disadvantages: Makes a little chirping sound on overrun.
This is a really interesting little device like anything new it has courted its fair share of controversy as reading some of the reviews on this site will show. What you need to know is that it can make a significant difference to some cars and is well worth considering as a performance modification on its own.
Available only for petrol engines, the way it works is by collapsing the manifold vacuum on over-run which creates a better mixture when the throttle is re-applied thus improving throttle response. It also causes an element of off-throttle turbulence as used in the latest Ford and Mercedes high performance engines this helps improve and smoothen acceleration. Both these improvements are evident in carb and petrol injected engines.
Unusually for such gadgets the results of some very comprehensive scientific tests at Prodrive and Millbrook have been published by Ecotek on their web site (www.ecotekplc.com) together with a surprisingly positive array of Motoring Magazine reviews.
The device is fitted to a manifold breather or servo line it is manufactured to a very high standard, easy to fit and requires very little maintenance.
How do I know all this? well I run a garage that fits these devices to customers cars on a regular basis. Ecotek have more than 300 accredited dealers in the UK and the device is very popular among both the younger sports oriented motorist as well as more experienced drivers who want to combine better driveability with economy we also get a few problem cars with flat spots and even the odd emission problem at MoT emission test time and yes the device can also prove invaluable on these occasions.
A well recognised product in the Trade, I can confirm that we get very high levels of customer satisfaction and the device is one of our best selling retro-fit accessories. On those occasions I meet other dealers I get similar feedback in fact I first came to know of the product through a friend in the Motor Trade.
Hopefully input from someone with extensive practical experience of this product will be helpful to potential customers.
Summary: One of the best engine mods available.

- 25/11/05 Great review Dave - it really makes a difference when someone in the trade can comment - it means they have a broad hands on experience of customers not just a personal view. Excellent! |

- 18/11/05 As one who works in the motor industry, I can easily answer Big Dave's question:
While the "younger sports oriented motorist" typically prefers a very "sharp" throttle response, many "ordinary" motorists (who make up the bulk of buyers) do not. Car makers could easily tune engines to have a very sharp throttle response, but generally do not since most people would see it as too "agressive" and hard to drive.
In terms of economy and emissions, Ecotek's own figures show that the improvements on modern production cars are pretty small (1% better economy, for example), which for most customers would not justify the extra cost of fitting the device. Also, car makers have to worry about issues such as routine maintenance, operation at exceptionally high or low temperatures, compliance with legal requirements, etc. |
