      Roof box

As a growing family of four space is a premium and one of the places we need lots of space is in our car. We bought a new Seat Ibiza about a year ago and although for everyday use I have been really pleased with the inside space and the boot space when we go away for the weekend or further afield we need a bit more space than the car can give us. We had toyed with the idea of getting a people carrier but I like to think I am still quite cool and stylish and would never be seen dead in a people carrier so we bought a regular car instead and settled upon a roof box for those times when we go away. As I have two children under three I still travel with two pushchairs, car seats, travel cots, suitcases and a dog who travels in the back in a dog cage and a husband who likes to go away with his golf clubs so we decided to purchase a roof box.

My husband had seen this one in Halfords for quite a while and had waited for a sale. It was over Christmas that they had a half price sale so we got this roof box for about £250 compared to the usual price of about £500 so I was really pleased with the deal although I thinks e would have been happy to pay full price for it its been that handy. According to all the industry advertising a Thule Karrite is one of the best on the market and as we were seeing it as a long term investment wanted to get a good box that would last for quite a few years.

The thing I like about this roof box is that it is not permanently fitted on the top of the car. We are able to remove it when we don't want to use it. It is way too heavy for me to lift so I leave it to my husband which I guess is ok if you have someone fairly tall and strong to help you put the box on the roof. The box came with two bars that fit across the top of our Seat Ibiza. We did have an initial problem with them that they did not fit and so had to take them back to Halfords and order a pair specifically for the Seat Ibiza but once we had done that it was all good. The bars snap onto the roof bars and then there is a lock and key system that keeps them in place. You do need to make sure that all the locks are lined up in order for them to shut properly but once this is done it is really easy to lock this box.

According to the information on this roof box it is made from high density polyethylene (HDPE) that is both extremely durable and fade resistant. We've made countless journeys in the car now with this on the top and it shows no signs of wear and tear which is great. It says in position well, there are no scrapes on the top of our car and it never moves and you can never hear it when you are driving the car. We were quite interested when we first bought it as to whether it would be noisy when driving and apart from maybe a bit more wind rushing through it there is no additional noise and it does not impair your journey in any way. We were also interested in the extra petrol it might have used being on the top of the car. We have an indicator on our car that tells us our diesel usage/mileage and after a long journey we noted that having the box on the roof really did not add any extra mileage to the car which was a great plus for us too.

The box has a capacity of  470 litres and really does add so much space that you almost don't know what to do with it. We put our extra suitcases up there, pushchairs, golf clubs etc. The only thing I would say is that its nice to put some padding up there so you don't just use it for one suitcase that then has space to move and bump around inside the box. Unfortunately once on the top of the car the box is too high for me, I'm 5,5 to put things in so I have to rely again on a tall husband to fill it but you could always use a step ladder if there is only you using the box. Sometimes as this is quite a rigid box you need to put things in in a bit of a jigsaw puzzle way. If you fill it to capacity you need to make sure everything fits and the lid closes as you cannot manipulate things into it as its rigid but its fits so much that this is never really a problem.

All in all this is a great way to gain extra storage for your car and is a roof box I recommend.
