Advantages: Gets rid of dog/smoke/fast food wrapper smell, Cheap for an air freshener, Looks really cool

Disadvantages: Can be overpowering, One smell based on harmful chemicals

*Why am I writing about air fresheners you might ask. Well I work part time at Halfords on the till and I am right next to the air fresheners display. I have spent many hours either tidying them or just staring at them so I have developed a slight obsession - don't back away! Honest I'll try to stay calm and composed for this review!*

Everyone who drives a car must have had a magic tree air freshener hanging from their rear view mirror at some time. If you don't drive then you must have been in a taxi with one - there's no escaping them! Magic tree air fresheners were launched in the USA in 1952 and are now sold in over 50 countries. They are the market leader in car air fresheners and have spawned many immitators - the tree shape is now the standard air freshener format.

They come in a wide variety of scents - at work we sell New Car Smell, Vanilla, Pine and Bouquet. As well as these there is Fruit Punch, Apple, Papaya, Spice, Peppermint, Watermelon, Musk and many more. I bet you never knew that car freshness could be flavoured in so many ways! There have been some new scents launched recently - Savanah. One of these is Savanah Heat, which is an interesting spicy scent and the tree itself is a zebra pattern. The others in the range are tiger striped and leopard spotted. Cool to hang in your car!

A piece of advice - when you get a magic tree read the packaging. It says to only pull the cardboard tree out slowly, about 1 cm a week or something. This is a good idea. If you do this then you get gradual release of the scent and it is not overpowering. If you take it out of the package all at once then you will probably keel over or will have to drive around with the windows open for several months. I speak from experience - you have been warned! Most people favour hanging the tree from their rear view mirror. As a recently qualified driver who can still remember the theory test I feel I should point out this can be dangerous an
d distracting to the driver. Lecture over. (I have a fluffy cat keyring dangling from mine!)

Magic trees are available from most supermarkets, petrol stations and of course, Halfords. I got the Savanah flavours from Homebase. We price one tree at £1.29 but Halfords is quite expensive and I believe you can get two for £1.99 from most places. If you wish to try and find an obscure flavour then email the company at info@magictree.co.uk. There is also a website listing the entire range at www.magictree.co.uk. Long live the tree!

PS - As a side note scientists have found that the smell from a new car is carcinogenic chemicals being released from the seats, dashboard, etc. I don't know why there would be a magic tree flavour based on harmful chemicals but there is. I think it is a bit like mothballs myself.

I think they last around about 2 months or so, depending on how strong a scent you want.

Newsflash - Woolworths in Exeter have the "Forest Fresh" flavour at only 48p each! They are on clearance so grab them while you can if you live nearby and are as obsessive as me!

I've had these in my car quite a few times. I understand why you're meant to leave the wrapper on for slow release but it looks so messy having the plastic hanging off it!
