Advantages: A decent bit of kit.

Disadvantages: Just the expense of buying.

TomTom's Windscreen Holder, and USB Car Charger.
This product may be just a spare twelve and 24 volt charger, with a spare mounting cradle for the windscreen, but if you lose or break yours, you are a bit stuck without one. Another use is for switching your TomTom from one car to another, simply keep a kit in each car to make life that bit easier.

Both the devices are identical in every way to the originals, so there are no modifications to be made. They are still in the black colour so do not stand out, however it is still advisable to hide these from view, when not in use.

Many vehicles have been broken into simply because there was a tell-tale "Sucker mark" on the screen. Police are advising drivers to never leave these devices in cars, because they are easier than a radio to steal, and a lot easier to sell too. Some Sat-Navs are configured to require a PIN number, but in most cases these options are simply not used.

At the moment, you are still legal to use one of these devices on the windscreen, but MOT testers have been asking drivers to remove them from the "Wiper arc", which to my mind is the best place to have them. We will have to wait and see what the future holds.

In my last car, I fashioned a cradle so my TomTom could be fitted lower down, not so obvious for thieves, yet still could be seen through the steering wheel. Perhaps in future I will have to do the same to my present vehicle.

I do appreciate you can manage without the spare mount, but if your charger packs up you only have two hours at the very most. I always carry a spare blade fuse for mine, it is taped to the plug so it can't get lost.

You can get these genuine parts from your TomTom dealer, or there are cheaper imports available on the internet, just be sure to check postage and packing prices. You should not pay more than about £15 for the two. The one illustrated is for the TomTom One XL, but the same goes for all other TomTom devices, as well of course as other Sat-nav systems.

Summary: It pays off when you really need one.
